6 do’s and don’ts for your hair during the summer, according to an expert

When it comes to styling your hair during the summer, it can be hard to find the perfect balance between low-maintenance looks and hair that can last through heat, humidity and sweat.

With that seemingly endless struggle in mind, we caught up with Mallory Passione, a Cutler Stylist and Fatboy Educator, to get the 411 on how we can achieve #hairgoals all season long. Keep reading for Mallory’s top do’s and don’ts of summer hair.

Margot Robbie this winter

Kieran:

"Margot’s hair gives her a modern interpretation of ‘Old Hollywood’ glamour. A much more linear line shows off her bone structure and the richer blonde brings out her beautiful blue eyes. The focus here is all cheek bones and eyes: Sleek, polished, beautiful."

Khloe Kardashian in 2015

Khloe Kardashian in 2017

Kieran:

"This gives Khloe a more sophisticated look. It’s strong with an edge but is still long enough to be sexy. The move away from the paler beige blond towards a more golden blonde softens the look and adds dimension complimenting her skin tone: Elegant and sophisticated."

Lucy Hale in 2011

Kieran:

"The change in Lucy Hale’s hair has taken her from a ‘sweet girl’ look to a sexier, edgier look. The shorter hair makes those beautiful eyes the star attraction.  The dark, rich color gives the look it’s strength whilst the textured ends give it its softness: Sexy, strong with edge."

Kieran:

"Rachel’s new look accentuates her neck line and the softness around the face, her cheekbones. This length makes her hair look fuller, more robust and the color is a warmer, golden tone. The warmer blond compliments her skin tone: Strong but still fun and flirty."

Bella Hadid in 2016

Kieran:

"The move away from long all one length gives more interest to Bella’s look and the center part allows the shorter style to frame her features perfectly. The rich brunette color works well for her skin tone and makes her eye color really pop: Classically beautiful."

Jenna Dewan in 2007

Kieran:

"This length on Jenna is a real statement length. No hiding behind hair here, it really opens up her face. Her check bones prominently come to the fore and the deep, lush, rich brunette color intensifies her amazing green eyes. Sultry and stunning."

Kim Kardashian in 2012

Kieran:

"Ever the hair chameleon, this look really compliments her jaw line, elongates her neck and accentuates her cheek bones. The rich color compliments her eye color perfectly because of the way it frames her face. The dichotomy of the deep, dark brown hair next to the whites of her eyes, makes the caramel in her eyes stand out: Rich, lustrous and bold."

1. Do carry a travel sized dry shampoo. The heat can change our commute to a sweaty mess, or a location may not have air conditioning. So to combat a sweaty scalp, or flat hair, keeping a little dry shampoo in your bag will bring your hair back to life while absorbing the sweat and grease.

2. Do bring Fatboy’s Tacky Oil to any water side occasion. I always keep one in my beach bag for when my hair is drying! I’ll put a pump or two throughout my hair to encourage the salt water to do it’s thing, while maintaining nourishment and shine. It will also prevent breakage from the salt drying out your hair.

3. Don’t over heat style your hair. Encouraging natural texture is what summer and 2019 is all about. So let those freak curls fly. Plus, you’re more likely to get more hair growth in the warmer months, so ditching the hot tools will just encourage longer locks.

4. Don’t use coconut oil. There is a common misconception that coconut oil is great for all hair types — but that’s false. It’s only helpful to certain strands. It can cause a protein build up in your hair, which would do the opposite effect and block your hair from moisture. Or if you’re putting coconut oil in your hair and heading out in the hot summer sun, the oil can cook your strands…

5. Do rock the wet look. You don’t need to be afraid of catching a cold with a wet head outside. And to encourage your dewy look, you can use Fatboy’s Water Wax to maintain the wet look throughout the day.

6. Don’t think too much!! The summer should be as stress-free as possible. Don’t over brush [your hair] and don’t spend more time in the bathroom than you need when you could be outside or sipping a spritzer with your friends.
