Anne Robinson, 76, will be soon appearing on Countdown as the new host of the programme, as she is set to replace Nick Hewer, 77, who is stepping down from the show this week. As the news was announced of Anne’s first episode airing on Monday June 28, Vanessa Feltz, 59, alleged she had made a “racist” remark.

Vanessa said Anne had reportedly asked the BBC Radio 2 host when she appeared on her former show The Weakest Link: “Looking the way you do, how do you think you land all these big black boyfriends?”

The 59-year-old explained to The Mirror back in February: “I said, ‘I don’t think you will use that in the show as it’s racist and also completely inaccurate and in every way unsuitable.’

“And they didn’t use it. I thought it was very ill-judged and they must have agreed as it wasn’t aired.”

The actual moment appeared to refer to Vanessa’s partner of 15 years, Ben Ofoedu, and it was completely cut from the episode.

Anne, however, has now clarified her remarks.

“What I actually said to her was, ‘How can someone like you attract gorgeous black boyfriends?'” she explained to The Sun

“First of all, she’d talked endlessly about doing just that.

“Secondly it’d taken her 16 years to discover she was upset about it, and maybe if I had a radio show to promote I might have done the same.

“I’m not complaining about it, but it wasn’t quite what I said.

“I think she came twice on The Weakest Link and we certainly heard nothing for 16 years.”

She added: “I probably couldn’t say it now, but it wasn’t derogatory except to her.”

Anne has promised to give Countdown contestants an easier time than she did on, The Weakest Link.

“I don’t want the contestants to have a box of Kleenex next to them,” she said to The Mirror.

“But it’s exactly the same as the Weakest Link. If there was a 19-year-old undergraduate, I wouldn’t treat her as I would a not-very-attractive old man, to whom I would ask, ‘Have you always been so devastatingly handsome?’”

Anne said she was “particularly excited” to be working alongside the show’s two other “formidable women”, Dictionary Corner’s Susie Dent and maths expert Rachel Riley.

“Three Clever Girls Do Countdown! Don’t you love the sound of that?” she said on Steph’s Packed Lunch.

“Worryingly, Susie and Rachel are not only very smart but younger, prettier and thinner than me.

“Sadly, there’s no time for another facelift so I’ll have to make do with this old one,” she joked in response to previous speculation over her plastic surgery.

“I am a crossword nut so the Countdown’s conundrums I can make sense of.

“But the adding up and taking away – I can’t go much further than working out the fee once my agent takes his cut.

“I’m slightly scared of those brains but I think the three of us will transform things, it will be Countdown goes chic, won’t it?”
