Gethin’s ‘secret marriage’ and Kym Marsh’s extreme regime for new BBC show Morning Live

We thought we’d seen it all when it comes to TV presenting pairs – from This Morning’s giggly best friends Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, to those warring frenemies Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.

But there are two new kids on the block out to steal their daytime crowns now that Kym Marsh and Gethin Jones have joined forces to front a new lifestyle show, BBC One’s Morning Live.

And after being in their company for just five minutes at OK!’s exclusive shoot, it doesn’t take a genius to work out why former Corrie star Kym, 44, and Welsh charmer Gethin, 42, are a TV match made in heaven.

With genuine warmth, being relatable and sibling-style banter, the duo have carved out a new niche for themselves on the small screen.

But don’t just take our word for it. The whopping 1 million-plus viewers speak for themselves, and the show also topped the ratings war against ITV’s Lorraine during its first week on air – a massive achievement that the pair aren’t taking for granted.

“I’m so glad it’s been well received but we’ve only just started,” Gethin says of their eight-week run. “We’re learning loads and trying to get better every day.”

Here, Kym, who is in a relationship with Scott Ratcliff, and single Gethin chat to us about their shared sense of humour, how Gethin’s already signed Kym up for next year’s Strictly and why Kym isn’t the best when it comes to playing Cupid…

So you two, how does it feel to be TV’s latest power couple?

Gethin: [Laughs] I don’t know about that! I’m so glad the show’s been well received but we’ve only just started. We’re learning loads and trying to get better every day.

Kym: For me, presenting is really new. I still feel like the new girl, whereas Gethin’s been a presenter for years.

Gethin: Erm, I’m not that old!

So how well did you know each other beforehand?

Kym: Geth and I had met in the past. I knew who he was and we’d said hello in passing. But we didn’t really know each other.

Gethin: On the first show, we had a guest talking about washing your facemasks. She said, “You need to give your facemask a jolly good pummelling.” At which point, me and Kym started rolling around laughing. I looked at Kym and thought, “This is going to be fine!” To have the same sense of humour is key.

Did you have a night out where you could bond before you started working together?

Kym: Ordinarily I’m sure we would have, but logistically we were at complete opposite ends of the country. And with Covid, there was no chance to meet up. We literally went in cold, so there is always that worry.

The worry that you could turn up and the other one is a massive diva?

Gethin: Don’t answer that Kym – I forbid you to answer that question.

Kym: Well, the rumours are all true! No, I’m joking, but it is always a worry. And because I’m a newbie I was worried Geth might look at me and think, “Why are you here?” Of course, he’s not and he’s been brilliant, supportive and the lovely man that he is.

Gethin: OK, if we’re doing niceties, I’ve learnt lots from Kym. She’s one of life’s listeners and so lovely to work with.

Are the early starts tough?

Gethin: Kym was funny last week. I suggested coming in earlier and she looked at me like, “Are you kidding me? I’m doing my hair at 4.45am.” I’m amazed, though. Kym turns up camera-ready at just before 6am.

Kym: I get up at 4.45am and am putting my face on. I’ve worked out that since I’ve turned 40 – my face takes about four hours to wake up after I have. I’m putting make-up on over the crease of the pillow.

How did you both celebrate when you got the job?

Gethin: I’m really, really bad at celebrating. I know this might sound cheesy, but I just feel very privileged to be going to work at the moment. My sister works in the Covid ward in Cardiff, my parents are shielding and my dad’s got a lot of lung problems. I said to Kym the other day, “If we get to 19 December and people have watched and engaged, then I might allow myself to have a glass of red wine with you.”

Kym: I relocated to London to do this. My kids were really sweet and very proud of me and gave me a bit of a send-off. My daughter baked me a cake with BBC on it and we had some “no-secco”. In the first lockdown, I drank my own body weight in prosecco, so Sober October was necessary!

Gethin: If she didn’t need a drink after that, she’ll definitely need a drink after working with me on live TV!

So you won’t be giving Holly and Phil a run for their money when it comes to drinking and partying?

Gethin: I think Kym and I are both excited about the prospect of going out and having dinner and a drink, as you would normally do at the end of the week with the team. I look forward to the day we can go out and really work out what we’re like.

Kym: We might never speak to each other again [laughs]. I agree, I look forward to it. But I can’t imagine me and Geth going out celebrating and then going to work in the same clothes we had on as the night before. That was brilliant!

How do you feel about the comparisons to Holly and Phil?

Gethin: I just don’t see that. Morning Live is just to offer something different. The options elsewhere are brilliant. Holly and Phil are fantastic, Lorraine Kelly is the queen of what she does and I had the pleasure of working with her on Daybreak many moons ago. But the idea of our show is to offer something different and topical because of the situation we’re in at the moment.

Tell us about your favourite guests so far…

Gethin: We love our team member Dr X and. Kym loves a little bit of a flirt with him!

Kym: You do as well – you’re terrible for it!

Gethin: I’m probably worse, actually.

Kym: I also loved having Nicki Chapman on. That woman’s a massive part of my history [she was a judge on Popstars when Hear’Say was formed]. So she’s a big part of why I’m sitting on the chair on the show anyway.

Who’s next on your wish list?

Gethin: I’ve promised the team that we’re going
to get Adele on by Christmas. I love her.

Kym: Judi Dench. That would just be wonderful.

Who’s the biggest joker out of the two of you?

Kym: Gethin.

Gethin: I’m not often very serious. I’ve seen a lot of bad stuff in life and I get very upset about things that are happening to people and when people are unkind to others. For some reason that makes me try to see the happy, positive side in everything. I understand when something’s serious and where there’s a place for a joke and when there’s not, but 99% of the time it’s mainly taking the mick.

Speaking of wind-ups, Gethin you recently tricked everyone into thinking you’d secretly got married. What happened?

Gethin: I honestly didn’t mean anything by it. I’m an ambassador for a jewellery brand and we were doing the Christmas advert where I was acting as a married dad with two kids and a dog. I posted a picture with the ring, went off to do the filming and when I came back I thought, “Oh no!”

What was everyone saying?

Gethin: My closest friends were getting asked about it at work. One of them is a school teacher and someone said to her, “Gethin got married.” She replied, “Don’t be silly!” As if it couldn’t happen… So the search goes on. And Kym’s been the worst matchmaker.

Kym: I just don’t know if I could punish any of my friends! [Laughs] I’m only kidding. We have had a few conversations, but I can’t think of someone who would be right for him. There’s no point pushing people together just because they’re single.

Do you want to meet someone Gethin?

Gethin: Kym and I have talked a lot and she knows that one day I’d love to have a family and children. I’ve never made a secret of that. But Miss Right hasn’t come along. Am I happy being single? Well, right now that’s where I find myself so you have to make the most of it. But of course I’d love to meet someone.

What are you looking for?

Gethin: Everyone seems to think I’m quite fussy but, for me, it’s about being able to have a laugh with someone. Of course, fancying someone is important, but as you get older it’s about friendship.

Kym, how are you finding being away from your boyfriend Scott and the kids?

Kym: My boyfriend and I don’t live together and he’s in the army. He went to Afghanistan for seven months and when he got back, he’s gone to Staff College, so me being down south is better for us because it’s closer and we see a lot more of each other. But my son’s missing me like mad as I am him. He’s 25-years-old and there’s absolutely no sign of him leaving home – ever. And to be honest that’s fine with me! Polly’s been with me in London which is great but I’m missing Emilie and Teddy so much. I’m fortunate as I’m in Teddy’s childcare bubble so normally I get to see him a lot but being in London means I don’t get to see him nearly as much.

Gethin, you’re also part of Strictly: It Takes Two. Will you be putting a good word in for Kym when it comes to the main show?

Gethin: I’ve signed her up for next year. It’s a done deal. No, seriously, I really want Kym to do it. I think she’d be phenomenal. She even points her toes when she crosses her legs, so it means she’s going to be an amazing dancer.

Kym: If there’s one reality show I would want to do, it would be Strictly. But I don’t know if it would be right for me.

Gethin: I can show you everything you need to know.

Kym: I’m not saying no, but we’ll see.

Kym, do you miss Coronation Street?

Kym: I left Corrie because I wanted to do something different. I played a character for 13 years and thought, “I’d like something else that’s going to challenge me.” And I’ve certainly been given that. But I do miss the people. I’m fortunate because I still keep in touch with everyone and I’m still in the group WhatsApp. There are people in that cast who are my best mates and always will be.

Morning Live is on weekdays at 9.15am on BBC one and is also available on iPlayer
