Jim Carrey's Vaccine Views Are Far From His Only Controversy

The topic of vaccination is a controversial one. Though science has proven vaccines work, some skeptics, including celebrities, believe vaccines are poisonous. And they aren’t afraid to speak about them regardless of how dangerous their opinions may be. Actor Jim Carrey has found himself in hot water more than once for his stance on vaccinations. However, it’s far from his only controversy.

Jim Carrey got in trouble for his stance against vaccines

Carrey has an impressive acting career that spans decades. The actor is famous for blockbusters such as Yes Man, The Mask, and Sonic. Though he is renowned for his elastic facial expressions and physical comedy, his personal life has taken center stage for very different reasons.

For years, Carrey has opposed vaccines. The actor mostly kept his life private before dating his ex-partner Jenny McCarthy. However, when the two began seeing each other in 2005, Carrey adopted more of her outspoken personality.

McCarthy was openly against vaccines. She publicly claimed they caused autism, a statement many experts for years have debunked.McCarthy has a son on the autism spectrum. Her views seemed to sweep Carrey up in a tidal wave of controversy as he soon began speaking out against vaccinations.

In 2009, the actor slammed childhood vaccination mandates. “In this growing crisis, we cannot afford to blindly trumpet the agenda of the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), or vaccine makers,” he said. “Now more than ever, we must resist the urge to close this book before it’s been written.”

He took to Twitter to call out California Gov. Jerry Brown for the new law mandating vaccinations for all public-school children. In his tweet, the actor called the governor a “corporate fascist” who “must be stopped.” Carrey further accused Brown of “poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum in mandatory vaccines.”

The star caught the ire of scientists and critics who slammed the Ace Ventura actor for what many considered dangerous views.

Jim Carrey has sparked controversy over the years

In 2017, Carrey once again found himself in murky waters when he weighed in on the cheating allegations against golfer Tiger Woods.

In a Twitter rant, the actor said, “No wife is blind enough to miss that much infidelity … Elin had 2 b a willing participant on the ride 4 whatever reason … kids/ lifestyle.”

The tweet didn’t sit well with many observers who felt the attack on Woods’ then-wife, Elin Nordegren, was unwarranted.

And in a 2011 incident, Carrey spray-painted the wall of his West Village art studio. When city officials painted over the graffiti, the actor repainted it with a character he named “Baba,” TMZ reported.

In yet another instance, the Man on the Moon actor made a viral video expressing his age-inappropriate love for actor Emma Stone. In the 2011 clip, the then-50-year-old said he wanted to have “chubby little freckle-faced kids” with the 23-year-old.

The actor weighed in on the Will Smith Oscars incident

This year’s Oscars were anything short of dramatic. Though the winners got their fair share of publicity, the story that carried the day was the Will Smith slap heard ’round the world. The King Richard star hit Chris Rock for the comedian’s joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has publicly shared her journey with alopecia.

While some observers remain on the fence about the incident and its authenticity, Carrey didn’t hold back when voicing his disgust for the debacle. Speaking with Gayle King, Carrey said of Smith: “You do not have the right to walk on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
