Martin Roberts, 56, has seen some sights during his 13 years on Homes Under The Hammer, and after a fan asked what his most memorable story was about the auction itself, he could only think of one. Sighing, he thought back to a time where a couple got very drunk in the auction house and ended up winning a property they didn’t actually want.

I don’t resent these people for doing this but it sort of broke all the rules

During an episode on his YouTube channel, the property expert read out a fan’s question: “‘What’s the biggest goldmine find on Homes Under The Hammer? The property that someone got for a steal at auction that ended up selling for loads?

“‘Is there any that spring to mind?'”

Martin scoffed as he recalled the couple who broke all the rules.

“Well, there was one really annoying one,” he said before adding: “Well, I say annoying.

“I don’t resent these people for doing this but it sort of broke all the rules and they did OK out of it.”

He went on to explain what happened that day, revealing the couple in question had spent a lot of time at the auction house bar before dutch courage took over, common sense went out the window and they decided to make a bid.

“They stumbled into the auction room and as a joke they put their hand up in the air and bid on something and they got it with their first bid.

He shrugged as he admitted: “It can happen.

“But they didn’t know what it was so they were in a right mess!”

Luckily, Martin revealed someone was on hand to save the day and rescue from them from their costly mistake.

“Annoyingly, somebody who had been wanting to buy that property but couldn’t make it to the action bought it straight back off them at a bit of a bonus!” Martin retorted.

“They paid £10,000 more than this couple had paid, so it’s those kind of stories… where you think, ‘Really?'”

“But good luck to them. That story was definitely one that sprung to mind!”

Elsewhere, the 56-year-old host had to apologise and promise to “do better” after a viewer scolded the program for showing unfinished projects instead of the final results.

Taking to Twitter, the disgruntled fans wrote: “When will HUTH stop going back to UNFINISHED projects?!

“Nothing winds me up more.”

Martin was quick to issue an apology, saying: “Wow, sincere apologies for ruining your morning.

“I’ll have words with the production team and promise to do better,” he replied, in view of his 26,200 followers.

Homes Under The Hammer airs weekdays at 10am on BBC One.
