Meek Mill Granted New Trial As Conviction Thrown Out

A Pennsylvania appeals court has overturned rapper Meek Mill‘s 2008 conviction on drug and gun charges.

The unanimous three-judge opinion granted the rapper a new trial as new evidence suggests police corruption. Prosecutors could choose to drop the case.

The Pennsylvania Superior Court also overturned the trial judge’s parole violation findings that sent Mill back to prison for five months in 2017.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said he will not call the police officer who was the sole prosecution witness because of new doubts about his credibility.

In a statement to Billboard, Mill said, “I’d like to thank the Pennsylvania Superior Court judges for their wisdom and transparency in reviewing my case, unanimously overturning my conviction and granting me a new trial.”

“The past 11 years have been mentally and emotionally challenging, but I’m ecstatic that justice prevailed,” he added.

Mill also thanked his family, attorneys, JAY-Z, Desiree Perez, Michael Rubin, and his fans for their support during the tumultuous period.
