NBA fines 76ers’ Ben Simmons $20,000, issues flagrant foul for elbowing Kyle Lowry’s groin

The NBA on Friday fined Philadelphia 76ers guard Ben Simmons $20,000 and issued him a flagrant foul for “making contact to the groin” of Toronto Raptors guard Kyle Lowry during Game 3 on Thursday.

The Sixers defeated the Raptors 116-95, taking a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinals series.

The incident happened with 8:36 left in the second quarter. Lowry and Simmons were fighting for rebounding position underneath Philadelphia’s basket when Simmons fell to the court and thought Lowry undercut him. As the two were tangled under the basket, Lowry hovered over Simmons, who elbowed Lowry below the belt.

Lowry, who stayed on the ground for a few minutes, took offense and made a plea to referee Scott Foster, who did not see the incident.

After the game, Lowry said Simmons apologized at halftime.

Opinion: This dominant Joel Embiid makes 76ers a true NBA Finals contender

“Said he didn’t mean to. Scott didn’t call it on the floor. It’s not like I’m going to dwell on it or (expletive) about it. It happened. It’s over now. We got our (expletive) kicked after. It didn’t matter.”

Game 4 is Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) in Philadelphia.
