Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia Are Expecting Their Third Child

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden have revealed some very happy news: Sofia is pregnant with the couple’s third child.

“We are happy and excited, and are looking forward to welcoming our third child—a sibling for Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel, and a new addition to our family,” the couple said in a statement. The Royal Court of Sweden added that Sofia was “feeling well,” and that the baby is expected to arrive “at the end of March or the beginning of April 2021.”

When the yet-to-be-named Prince or Princess is born in the spring, they will be the first of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s grandchildren to be born without an HRH title, after last year’s change to the composition of the Royal House. In 2019, the Swedish royal family announced that the King’s grandchildren—with the exception heir apparent Crown Princess Victoria’s children—would no longer hold HRH (His or Her Royal Highness) titles, and they would cease to be a part of the Royal House. They do, however, continue to have the “personal” titles of Prince or Princess, and and remain members of the royal family.

“The purpose of these changes is to establish which members of The Royal Family may be expected to perform official duties incumbent on the Head of State or related to the function of the Head of State,” a palace statement read.

Prince Carl Philip has praised the move, saying it will allow his children to have “freer choices.” At the time of the announcement, he said, “Today, the King announced the decision that our children no longer hold the Royal Highness position. We see this as positive as Alexander and Gabriel will have freer choices in life.”
