Hairdresser claims bicarbonate of soda is the secret to salon-worthy locks at home as it’ll fix damaged & lifeless hair
HAIR salons remain closed across the UK thanks to coronavirus restrictions across the nation, but you can still get salon-worthy locks at home with a fuss-free and super cheap hack.
Top London hairdresser and salon owner Ozzie Rizzo revealed bicarbonate of soda is the answer to all your troubling hair concerns and shared an easy way you can use it yourself at home.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced lockdown restrictions in January amid rising coronavirus cases that are set to last until at least March 8.
This means people have been forced to go without luxury salon treatments, and instead, tackle it themselves at home until they open again.
Luckily, the cheap household buy promises to dissolve any dirt and excess oil from your hair when mixed with water to create a shampoo-like treatment.
When used as a deep-cleanse treatment for your hair, it will instantly transform your damaged, lifeless and weighed-down mane and you'll be feeling pretty good about yourself in no time.
Explaining how it works, Ozzie said: “Bicarbonate of soda can work as a clarifying cleanser for your hair, by turning the protective sebum of your hair into soap, cleaning strands by removing any product residue as well as ‘detoxing’ your scalp and hair.
“The ingredient can have many benefits such as the ability to dissolve excess oil and dirt residue from your hair, act as a scalp exfoliator (due to its abrasive texture) increase your hair’s shine and softness, as well as eliminating any bad odours.”
The cleansing qualities of the powder, which doesn’t contain any parabens or fragrances, can also work to tackle dandruff – so bye-bye pricey anti-dandruff shampoos.
The best benefit? This product is super cheap compared to some expensive hair products, retailing on average at just £2.
How to create your own cleansing treatment at home
You will need:
- A box of bicarbonate of soda
- A bowl or empty shampoo bottle
- Apple cider vinegar (mixed water to vinegar 4:1) to rinse
- Optional essential oil
- Mix one heaped tablespoon of baking soda, with 1 glass of water (after 2/4 times of this deep-cleansing treatment decrease amount to ½ a teaspoon in half a glass of water).
- Add a few drops of essential oil fragrances to the mixture (if you wish).
- Wet your hair in the shower and gently apply the treatment all over your hair including your roots and ends.
- Leave in for a minute whilst massaging through, then rinse with water.
- Finish this off with using apple cider vinegar to rinse off, this will restore the pH balance whilst adding shine to your locks.
Ozzie Rizzo does warn, however, that there are precautions to take while doing the treatment.
He claims: “This is not a recommended treatment if you have an extremely dry or sensitive scalp or skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, as this can over-strip the hair cuticle and dry the hair out even more.
And continues: "Only do this treatment as a one off or weekly if your hair is feeling like it needs a cleanse, as baking soda can prove to be extremely drying if used too often.”
