I'm a cleaning whizz – the 65p trick that'll brighten your laundry & it's already sitting in your kitchen | The Sun

A SUSTAINABLE cleaning guru has revealed an inexpensive trick to boost your laundry and keep it bright using a common kitchen staple.

There are numerous products in the market that promise to keep your garments bright and full of colour – however, over time, they can do quite the opposite, especially if used on a frequent basis.

Speaking to The Express, Paula Quazi, sustainable cleaning expert and Smol co-founder, agreed: "Products containing higher concentrations of harsh chemicals will also damage clothes.

"Most stain gels, for instance, simply bleach your clothes clean – instead look for a stain remover that uses enzymes to break down the proteins of common stains."

Although chucking in baking soda with every wash might not be the best idea, it can help to add a natural "boost" every now and then, according to gurus.

Traditionally used in baking, this common kitchen staple is great for dissolving dirt and grime thanks to its alkaline properties.

''Baking soda is a great way to eliminate odours, whilst also brightening your colours and whitening your whites,'' said Lauren Clark, large appliances expert at AO.com.

"It can act as a laundry detergent booster and a natural fabric softener all in one."

Another whizz, Dean Davies, a professional cleaner at Fantastic Services, agreed, adding: "Baking soda acts as a natural fabric softener, it can also regulate the pH level of water so that it doesn't become too acidic.

"While yes, you can add baking soda to your laundry detergent, it won't do much for your clothes.''

For those hoping that this inexpensive baking ingredient will save their favourite T-shirts from bad stains, he said that the powder only ''may have a proven effect of neutralising odours and stains''.

Nonetheless, whilst there there are a few perks to baking soda, cleaning enthusiasts should also make sure to use it correctly, the experts warned.

Sharing his expertise, Dean pointed out that baking soda is "not as effective as laundry detergents and can discolour pH-sensitive fabrics when used to clean them''.

This means that washing your clothes with a scoop baking soda alone is not the best of ideas.

Instead, it should be used alongside your regular detergent.

Fellow cleaning fans may have also heard of mixing together baking soda with white vinegar – but here, Dean advised to give the hack a miss.
