Mum transforms poky cupboard under-the-stairs into a giant playroom for her kids with its own roof and kitchen

A MUM has shared photos of the stylish under-the-stairs playroom that she had designed for her three children.

Amber Smith McGraw, 36, from Cleveland in Ohio, said her stepdad brought her dream playroom visions to life and created the incredible playhouse in just four days.

The mum, who works in progressive insurance, said she always wanted to utilise the space under the basement stairs in their family home.

Amber, who is mum to Archer, three, Magnolia, one, and Matilda, six months old, said the area was a small, unused space and is now the perfect play area for her little ones.

Sharing the incredible renovation to Facebook, Amber wrote: “Our under the stairs playhouse dream is almost complete!

“Pappy and Mimi brought my vision to life this week and I couldn’t be more thrilled for the kids to see this.

“Both wallpapers are peel & stick from Amazon.

“Yes, I realize the floral wallpaper is upside down, but my stepdad had worked so hard on this place for my children that I didn't have the heart to tell him to fix it.

“The window is just a window picture frame from Amazon that I painted white. I cut an old Aden & Anais swaddle to make the “curtain” behind the window.

“Flower box and flowers are from Amazon. We used square dowel rods to make the roof and I painted them white. The door knob is an antique pull I got at a flea market.

“The two tier shelf is a shoe rack from Amazon. I got the kitchen secondhand on Marketplace from Labebe and the rug & chair are from Target.

“The small kitchen appliances are spiekind from Amazon. We cut a piece of plywood and used hinges to make the door and I painted it pink with chalk paint.

“We used cabinet magnets to make sure it could stay shut. I still need to hang a few pieces of art and wreath on the door, and decide on a light fixture.

“I also want to add a placemat as a doormat, but I haven't found the right one yet. but I’m so excited to share this with my kids and you all!’

The post instantly raked up over 1,000 likes and hundreds of comments with lots of parents impressed by the incredible under-the-stairs design.

Amber said her stepdad and mum worked very hard to turn the space under the basement stairs into a playhouse in just a few days.

The mum said the previous owners of the home finished decorating the basement and created the space under the stairs with a small door opening.

As soon as she moved into the house, she knew it would be the perfect blank space and her mind started to run wild with playroom ideas.

Amber said: “It made perfect sense to create an indoor playhouse inside this space for our toddlers since we live in NE Ohio which is known for its long, blustery winters.

“We've been quarantined since March, so the more places for indoor exploration and play, the better. I wanted to utilize the corner area the best I could since it was a small unused space.

“We did all of this in a weekend and for under $400 (£305)! We worked very hard and thoughtfully to make this area not only fun but functional.”

She said: “I wanted a calm floral that would compliment the kitchen’s simple woodland look. I decided to use a simple white textured brick wallpaper to create the outside of the house.

“Both wallpapers are peel and stick from Amazon. Then I created a template with tape to make the house shape.

“My stepdad cut the wallpaper based on my outline and placed it in the corner to make the brick house then he then hung the floral wallpaper on the tall, skinny wall inside the space.”

Next they nailed the Amazon window picture frame, curtains and flower box with flowers before using square dowel rods to make the roof line.

The mother then filled the inside with cute accessories including a rug, chair and small kitchen appliances with an adorable baking set.

She said: “I wanted the kids to have a cozy space inside to read or relax.

“The small kitchen appliances are seriously so cute, but some small pieces we had to put away for later as they are too small for use now.

“We absolutely love the results! It's cosy, simple, kid friendly, but still aesthetically pleasing for adults.

“The kids were so excited and have been playing there everyday! They love the swivel chair and kitchen accessories.

“We’ve been blown away by the response on social media. It’s been so rewarding to see everyone’s positive feedback.”

One user commented: “Now I'm looking for a house specifically with storage under the stairs.’

Another replied: “That's a really creative way to use that space. It looks awesome.”

Meanwhile a third added: “I love it, I don’t think our understairs cupboard would be big enough tho.”

One woman tried to persuade her husband to create something similar, writing: “Can we buy a house with stairs and have a daughter so you can build this?”
