Yoshio Kubo Men’s Spring 2022
Yoshio Kubo looked to the Japanese warrior monks of centuries past as his inspiration for spring, transforming their ceremonial garb using technical fabrics like mesh and stretch materials and draping them to create a contemporary utilitarian look.
He found inspiration in the monks’ ample kimonos, traditionally worn larger than in other walks of life — Kubo surmised that the monastic garments were intended to make them look larger and more threatening — as well as their face coverings and sashes.
“I brought sports details, it’s like a hybrid monk style,” said the designer, who combines an urban vocabulary with historical references from his homeland each season.

In a color palette of beige and pale khaki, black and red, his urban warriors mounted the steps to the temple, their loose-fitting outfits covered with multiple pockets or featuring flaps, loose tabs of fabric and strapping details, or topped with exaggerated hoods that zipped to cover the face.
