This idyllic photograph of Queen Camilla was taken in the comfortable setting of her own home at Clarence House, London. Body language expert Judi James spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about what the photo shows about Camilla’s place in the Royal Family.
The sweet photograph depicted Camilla sitting on the edge of her sofa, beaming, surrounded by a mound of teddies.
These were all little Paddington Bears, a British character that became synonymous with the Queen after her Platinum Jubilee skit with the toy.
The caption began with the thoughtful request: “Please look after this bear.”
It continued: “The Queen Consort is pictured with some of the 1,000 teddy bears that were left in tribute to Queen Elizabeth, and will shortly find new loving homes at @barnados_uk children’s services.
“The bears have been scrubbed up to look their best, before they are delivered to their new homes.
“The bears are currently being well looked after at Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and in the Royal Parks nursery located in Hyde Park.”
The Instagram post continued to explain that the photograph was taken on October 13, 2022 – the 64th anniversary of the first Paddington Bear book.
Judi pointed out that Camilla was a very deliberate choice to be the face of this message – although it could have easily been another royal.
She explained that the poster child for this could have been Charlotte or Louise as “direct relatives of the Queen”.
However, Camilla’s appearance has “placed her firmly in the heart of the family despite being a daughter-in-law”.
Times have changed for two significant women who have married into the Royal Family – Camilla and Fergie.
Judi explained: “We are now seeing Fergie in charge of the Queen’s corgis and Camilla hugging the Queen’s bear in a way that would have been unthinkable several years ago, when these two women were more controversial characters.”
The appointment of Camilla to deliver the message is key, as is the staging of the photograph, according to Judi.
The expert described the image as “a cosy-looking setting, a warm slightly self-effacing smile and, of course, a mountain of Paddington toys that were left in remembrance of the Queen and what was probably one of her most sweetly iconic moments during her reign”.
She continued: “This one pose tends to market Camilla in a way that a thousand photos taken on the job might not.”
It highlights her relationship with the late monarch, as it suggests “personal knowledge, closeness and affection”.
Indeed, we know that the Queen had an extreme fondness for Camilla, having told the public it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla be known as Queen Consort when Charles succeeded the throne.
Not only does Camilla’s pose highlight the strong bond between herself and the Queen, it places her “in the role” of Queen herself.
Judi commented that it is “as though the bears are some form of passing the baton on”.
Royal fans were delighted at the gesture and took to Instagram, with @lauren.vasil stating: “What a wonderful way to honour the queen.”
@pure_e_presley added: “Our wonderful Queen Consort.” @mariya_drogon said: “Her Majesty looking beautiful.”
