‘Day of the Dead’ Barbie sparks ‘cultural appropriation’ backlash
This Day of the Dead Barbie can die at any time, according to social justice warriors.
Mattel’s just announced the Día de los Muertos Barbie doll is set to hit shelves Thursday at Target, Walmart and online via Amazon.com. The $75 collectible’s floor-length black dress and skull makeup are inspired by the traditional Mexican outfits and makeup worn on the historic holiday — but some find her getup offensive.
“Is this a bad joke or what?” tweeted a self-proclaimed “Mexico expert” and travel blogger. “Día de los Muertos is one of our most sacred traditions in Mexico dating back to prehispanic days. Stop production!”
“Cultural appropriation at its worst!” tweeted another.
Others appear torn about the representation the doll brings, questioning if it’s a celebration of Mexican culture or just exploitation.
“As fierce/cool as this doll is, it feels odd that a day of the dead Barbie is being made by an American company for profit,” one conflicted commenter posted.
Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrating the lives of deceased loved ones. It takes place annually from October 31 to November 2.
Other recent Barbie editions have included Rosa Parks, Sally Ride and David Bowie versions of the doll. The iconic toy recently celebrated its 60th anniversary.
