A Birmingham headteacher has revealed she has "banned" the use of "sexist" language at her primary school.
Speaking on Thursday's instalment of Good Morning Britain, Sarah Hewitt-Clarkson said that she did not allow pupils to say terms such as "man up" and "grow a pair" and even prohibited teachers from saying "good morning boys and girls".
Sarah, who heads up Anderton Park Primary, explained: "In the last year, we have seen the biggest ever increase in child abuse and grooming.
"If our boys, and girls, grow up and we don't address this sexist language where boys are told to 'man up', 'grow a pair', 'boys don't cry', it is very damaging for them."
She continued: "Abusers later on, or bullies, will also use this fear. Fear is the biggest weapon that abusers have.
"If boys are told that boys aren't afraid, boys don't get scared, boys don't talk about their feelings, then where are they going to go when they are afraid?"
Presenter Ben Shephard offered his input as he noted that those phrases were naturally "being phased out".
Meanwhile, broadcaster Nana Akua, who was involved in the discussion, criticised Sarah's views.
"I think it is absolutely ridiculous," Nana said. "What we are doing here is dissecting language in the most clinical form and then creating a generation of wallflower kids who are literally listening for an offence.
"It is getting to the point where we are losing a grip. We need to be looking at the context and how to use a language that is non-offensive," she added.
Good Morning Britain viewers also appeared to have the same views as Nana, with one person tweeting: "Teaching young children not to say "hey guys" because its sexist is just ridiculous #goodmorningbritain."
Another added: "Apparently you can't say "guys" anymore. "Hey guys" ffs how do I get off this wet wipe planet!? #goodmorningbritain."
A third chimed in: '#goodmorningbritain @GMB oh gosh how ridiculous…. i have 2 girls and 1 boy…and collectively I call them guys! #bekindtooneanother @susannareid100."
