Kristin Chenoweth was on cloud nine on a recent flight.
We hear the “Wicked” star had a chance meeting with the real-life pilot whose story is told in the Broadway hit “Come From Away,” during a flight this week.
A source tells us Chenoweth, 53, was flying to Los Angeles when she recognized the name of pilot Beverley Bass over the PA system and asked if she could meet her.
Bass was piloting a flight from France to Dallas on 9/11 and diverted the plane to Newfoundland as part of Canada’s “Operation Yellow Ribbon,” which is portrayed in the hit musical “Come From Away.”
Chenoweth, who we are told has seen the show several times, “wanted to say hi, which got relayed to Beverley,” says our source. “Beverley then invited her up to the cockpit… They had never met before and Kristin was going on and on about how much she loved the show.”
Bass is played by Rachel Tucker in the musical.
Coincidentally, in September, Chenoweth posted a jokey video of herself on Twitter showing up at the stage door of the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in a captain’s uniform to try out for the show. Upon arrival, she meets Tucker, who tells her she is “a little late.”
“Come From Away,” opened in February of 2017. It was shut down during the pandemic and reopened in September. It was also made into a recent film version for Apple TV+.
Bass, the first woman promoted to captain at American Airlines, has seen the show a reported 158 times and knows all the dialog and song lyrics.
