Lad pops the question with ‘marry me’ written in alphabet spaghetti for dinner
When it comes to proposals, it often takes blokes a number of months to plan the special moment.
But one man decided to keep it simple when he decided it was time to go down on one knee.
Karen Menton was left speechless when her boyfriend Diarmuid asked her to marry him back in 2019.
Diarmuid spelled out the words "marry me" in alphabet spaghetti on toast for dinner before revealing an engagement ring.
He said: "I had been racking my brains for weeks, how will I ask her. But the only idea that kept coming back was Heinz Alphabetti.
"She really loved having it on toast for her dinner, which is why it came to mind."
He added: "I knew it would catch her unaware to sit down for her dinner, look down at her plate to read the words 'Marry me'."
Diarmuid decided he would disguise a day of annual leave as a sick day to give him time to prepare for the big moment.
Then it took him just one can of Heinz Alphabetti to spell out "Karen Menton, will you marry me" on a slice of toast.
When Karen arrived home for dinner, she was quickly taken to her seat before her dinner "went cold", reports the Irish Mirror.
He explained: "I had taken an annual leave day, but pulled off a very convincing sickie so that Karen would think I was just at home.
"I knew I would need the whole day to set everything up perfectly.
"I also made my own ring-box and I fashioned a cover to put over her plate so that she wouldn't see until the perfect moment.
"Then, I revealed the plate, and I got down on one knee with my homemade ring box and I asked her to marry me."
Karen replied to her boyfriend's proposal with "are you kidding me" before saying yes.
Diarmuid had a special dinner booked in a nearby restaurant so Karen didn't actually eat the spaghetti on toast.
Instead she contacted Heinz to ask for Alphabetti Spaghetti letters to mark the proposal which happened in 2019.
She said: "The funny thing is, I was actually planning on asking Diarmuid (to marry me) on February 29, I'd even bought a ring."
Karen added: "We like to travel so I had flights booked to Eindhoven and I was going to ask him while we were there.
"Little did I know that we would be going there celebrating the engagement, but it would have happened a week earlier.
"Diarmuid's a man who's all about equality, but we're both delighted that he got in there first."
Heinz heard of the special proposal and were inspired to offer a Valentine's version of their Alphabetti for couples this year.
The special can only features the letters M, A, R, Y and E steeped in tomato sauce.
Heinz Ireland marketing manager, Emily O'Kane, said: "We just loved the idea and immediately got to work on creating this limited edition 'Marry Me' version of Heinz Alphabetti just in time for Valentine's Day.
"This is a true one-off, born in Ireland and there are only a limited number of cans for sale via Heinz to home for a limited time only."
So if you have a special someone you'd like to propose to, you can order the special can from February 1.
