A mum showed how she makes a £85 food shop stretch for two weeks.

Megan Kent shops at Aldi, where she buys enough products to feed herself her partner and their three-year-old for a fortnight.

Impressively, her last bill came to just £84.18.

In an interview with Birmingham Live, Megan said he secret to her success is meal planning.

She draws up an extensive plan for the entire fortnight, including lunches and packed lunches for nursery, evening meals, snacks, leisurely weekend brunches and Sunday roasts.

The Stoke-on-Trent-based parent said: ”Breakfast is not written down as it’s not what I purchased in this shop but it’s usually cereal that I buy in bulk which lasts forever.”

Lunch is more structured though, with Megan making a batch of soup at the start of each week using butternut squash, onions, carrots, garlic and vegetable stock cubes.

The soup, along with sandwiches, beans on toast or instant noodles, make up her midday meals.

Packed lunches are also planned out for her daughter.

These typically consist of a sandwich, yogurt, crisps, fruit and a small packet of biscuits.

Then for dinner, Megan cooks up a big batch and saves enough for leftovers the next day.

Some of her favourite affordable dishes include fajitas, chilli, chicken wraps, pasta bakes, tuna pasta, stir fries and roast dinners.

There’s plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, plus lots of store cupboard essentials that will last the fortnight, such as tins of tuna and beans, packets of rice and noodles and tortilla wraps.

Megan also utilises the freezer by buying frozen curly fries, sweet potato fries and a 1kg bag of chicken breasts to spread over 14 days.

The total spend even includes shampoo, conditioner and shower gel plus bin bags, kitchen roll and toilet rolls.

And there’s snacks and treats on there too, such as biscuits, yogurts, ice cream, crisps and fruit plus cordial and soda as drinks.

The only thing that’s missing is breakfast cereal, which Megan buys in bulk.
