My husband refuses to spend money – even though we've paid off our mortgage

DEAR DEIDRE: MOST people would be thrilled to have paid off their mortgage at 40 but our house is a dump because my husband is so mean with money.

I am woman of 40 and he is 42.

We have been married for 15 years and have four children but I provide for them in every way. I pay for everything for the kids, including their school uniforms.

We’ve never been on holiday as my husband has ploughed all our cash into the mortgage.

His father died and left him a huge sum of money, which is now in savings. He won’t spend a penny on anything.

Our windows are so bad that you can’t see out of some of them. The paint is crumbling off the frames.

The garage door is off its hinges, and our bathrooms are outdated and disgusting.

I’m fed up. I love my husband but he’s such a Scrooge.

DEIDRE SAYS: This thriftiness may have been passed down by his parents, especially if they had financial difficulties or perhaps lost a home.

Now you own your home, that is a big financial commitment out of the way.

Explain to your husband that you love him but things would be better for the whole family if you could now put some of the money into your home.

Your house will go up in value and you will all feel more comfortable.

My support pack Standing Up For Yourself will help you.
