My son’s refusing to pay rent for his room at home when he goes to university – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: SOON my son is going off to university. He’ll be living in halls and says he’ll stop paying rent for his room back at home.

He took a gap year after his A-levels and has been working part-time in a sports hall since then. He’s been paying me £100 a month.

I’m a single parent on a low wage and I need that £100 he chips in. He’s 18 and I’m 39.

When he goes to uni, he will be leaving his stuff in his room and staying here again during the holidays.

Do you think it’s unfair to ask him to keep paying rent, even though he is at university? I don’t think so but it’s causing lots of rows.

DEIDRE SAYS: I can see why you are upset if losing that rent is going to leave a big hole in your budget. But being a student is very costly these days and your son will be building up a large debt.

Ask to sit down with him and all the figures – his costs and your family costs – so you can see each other’s point of view better.

Would it help if he had a big clear-out so you have some use of the room while he is away?
