National Insurance scam warning after fraudsters trick thousands with fake calls

Brits are being tricked into handing over their personal details after a scam claims they need a new National Insurance number.

Action Fraud has received more than 1,000 calls about the new telephone scam, reports Daily Record.

Victims are told their National Insurance numbers have been "compromised" with an automated phone call.

They are asked to "press 1" to be connected to someone who can "fix" the problem when it's actually fraudsters looking to take details.

Once connected, victims are then asked to hand over information to be able to receive a new National Insurance number.

A National Insurance number helps identify you on UK and Scottish systems, including HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

But giving criminals your personal details will enable them to commit fraud using your information.

Pauline Smith, Head of Action Fraud, said: "We are asking the public to remain vigilant and be cautious of any automated calls they receive mentioning their National Insurance number becoming compromised.

"It's important to remember if you're contacted out the blue by someone asking for your personal or financial details, this could be a scam.

"Even confirming personal details, such as your email address, date of birth or mother's maiden name, can be used by criminals to commit fraud. If you have any doubts about what is being asked of you, hang up. No legitimate organisation will rush or pressure you."

To protect yourself from fraudsters, you need to remember to take a moment to stop and think about giving your details away.

Always ask yourself if it could be fake and remember it's okay to reject.

If you have provided personal details to someone over the phone and worry it might have been a scam, contact your bank, building society and credit card company immediately.

You can also report it the police and contact CIFAS to apply for protective registration.
