You’d probably assume that someone who does as many royal appointments as the Queen has a make-up artist on-hand to help make sure foundation is blended and lipstick applied perfectly.

But in fact, Queen Elizabeth, much like Kate Middleton, prefers to do her own make-up for the most part of the year. The only exception is her annual Christmas Day broadcast, when she apparently asks make-up artist Marilyn Widdess for expert help.

The news comes from royal stylist Angela Kelly’s book, titled The Other Side of the Coin: the Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe.

“You might be surprised to know that this is the only occasion throughout the year when Her Majesty does not do her own make-up," writes Kelly.

And surprised we are. Though, there does seem to be a tradition of royal women training themselves in the subtle art of protocol-friendly make-up.

Kate, for example, famously did her own wedding-day make-up, after reportedly getting guidance from make-up artists Arabella Preston and Hannah Martin.

Meghan Markle has also become something of a beauty expert, after master make-up artist and her personal friend Daniel Martin gave her some guidance on applying make-up for public events. Though, it’s said he did in fact create her freckle-friendly and radiant wedding-day look.

Both Kate and Meghan seem to be going through beauty transitions recently, with Meghan’s laid-back new look possibly to match her new life out in LA.

The mum-of-one has been opting for more flowing and beachy hair looks, and has been experimenting more with lip colours and smokey eyeliner.

Kate, on the other hand, has given her make-up a summery update as of late. Usually a fan of a matte base and neutral tones, the mum-of-three has been seen with radiant skin, a punchy shade of blusher, exaggerated highlighter on her cheekbones, and a serious power-brow.

It also seems she’s given her complexion a faux bronze tint, which is something many of us could benefit from after months spent indoors. We’d guess she’s most likely used a cream bronzer, and taken it around her hairline and down her cheekbones and nose – which also creates a contoured appearance.
