Morning Live: Woman shares tips on receipt scanning

Receipts are given by retailers as a proof of payment but the majority of people will throw them away soon after. Speaking on BBC’s Morning Live, one savvy shopper shared why keeping them could actually help you make money.

With a little bit of extra work after buying a food shop or item from a retailer, scanning receipts online could be a real money earner.

Speaking on BBC’s Morning Live, one mum-of-three Yvette Duigan, shared tips on how to create some extra cash.

She said: “So, I do receipt scanning…You download an app to your phone and take a picture of your receipts and it uploads and that converts to points.

“Once you get to a certain threshold, you can cash them in for vouchers.”

The shopper explained that scanning receipts from a supermarket shop could earn her anywhere between £20 to £30 a month.

Receipt scanning apps include Shopmium, GreenJin and Quidco.

Each company has different terms and conditions so customers should check these out before using the app.

Users will also have to scan a number of receipts to benefit from any rewards.

How much money made from scanning receipts, sometimes depends on the items brought.

One offer found on Morning Live explained that an £5 voucher for scanning 25 takeaway receipts.

Another app required 270 receipts for the same £5.

However if shoppers are willing to spend a bit of their spare time gathering and scanning the receipts, it could help provide a little extra cash.

Some sites offer payment straight into a linked bank account while others let users turn them into rewards.

How do companies benefit from customers scanning their receipts?

By looking at thousands of people’s receipts, they can analyse trends and see what the customer regularly purchases.

They can then sell this data on to other companies which tells them the average time a customer will shop, the number of items the shopper purchases and what they purchase.

Yvette added that scanning receipts isn’t the only way she helps to save a bit of extra cash.

She said: “I’ve been doing competitions for a long time…I’ve been doing them for about 10 years plus.

“I would say my top prize that I have won was a holiday to the Maldives…I’ve won £5,000 cash, £2,000 worth of bathroom products and an iPhone.”

The mum explained that she uses a money saving website which helps her to know what competitions are genuine and free.

Taking to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, another savvy shopper shared why McDonald’s customers should always keep their food receipts.

According to the woman, they contain a unique survey code which can be used to claim a free meal.

All that the fast food chain requires in return is for customers to complete a short survey.

The woman said: “Doing the survey doesn’t take more than two minutes.”
