As the heatwave continues most of us are going to be grabbing for our nearest bottle of sunscreen, but do we even know how much we should be applying?
Stats show that nearly half of us (44 per cent) use less than half of the recommended amount, while stats by YouGov reveal that almost a quarter (23 per cent) don’t apply sunscreen at all.
However, now the Hospital Group have come up with a handy guide for us, complete with pictures, showing exactly how many teaspoons we should be applying to different parts of the body.
Overall we should be using a minimum of six teaspoons, with two on our legs and even one for your chest and stomach. Here we look at how many teaspoons of sunscreen we should be using on different body parts.
Two teaspoons of sunscreens should be used for your legs – one for each leg and six teaspoons for your whole body
Your legs need the most amount of coverage – with two teaspoons of sunscreen – one for each. Make sure you get the tops of your legs too – especially if they’re being exposed to the sun.
Lauren Mackenzie, from the The Hospital Group said that we should ‘apply the cream before we leave the house and then wait half an hour after sun cream application before going in the sun or getting in the water.’
While your arms need a little less sunscreen – half a teaspoon for each arms – so one in total
The arms need just one teaspoon of sunscreen – make sure to cover the backs of your arms and any creases in your arms. Reapply when you start to sweat.
According to Lauren most of us aren’t reapplying enough either, just ‘applying it a maximum of once per day.’ Reapply as much as you feel you need to and especially when you get out of the water or start to sweat.

Lauren also reminds us that we can burn on a cloudy day too: ‘It doesn’t have to be bright sunshine for the sun’s rays to cause skin damage – yet the majority of us will only apply sun cream if it’s a sunny day in the UK.’
While she also says we can burn in the UK too as UV rays across the country can be as high as other warm countries such as Spain and the US.
Your back and shoulders can catch the sun quite easily – so make sure you are putting on one teaspoon of sunscreen
When it comes to the back and shoulders most of us struggle to even to get to them, but if you have your back in the sun – then you should make sure there is at least one teaspoon of sunscreen on it. Ask a friend if you’re struggling.

Even if you’re not sunbathing, your chest could be out in the sun when just walking around – so make sure your chest and tummy is lathered with one teaspoon of sunscreen and
Your SPF number choice should be are dully considered too. Most of us only use an SPF 25 or lower. Lauren recommends a SPF 30, which will protect your better when applied correctly.
