TikTok goes mad for this method of sheet masking that promises to help the ingredients absorb better

TikTok produces some questionable beauty trends, but when it gets it right, it gets it right.

One of the most recent, and surprisingly non-bizarre, beauty trends to go viral is facial steaming – which is also loved by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Charlotte Crosby, and Chrissy Teigen.

  • What are facial steamers? Stars like Charlotte Crosby are raving about them for their pore-cleansing powers

  • Searches for ‘super skincare’ ingredient alpha arbutin grew by 410 per cent but can it really fade hyperpigmentation?

But it’s not just any old form of facial steaming. In true TikTok fashion the trend has a bit of a twist, and it sees people using the device while they have a sheet mask on.

Some users may have jumped on board the trend purely because of the relaxation element, but this way of facial steaming actually does boast some impressive skin-boosting benefits.

“Steaming is great to assist with masks and topicals as it opens up the pores, allowing for better absorption,” says Dr Sarah Shah, specialist in aesthetic medicine and founder of London’s Artistry Clinic .

“Steam can also help loosen sebum and unblock clogged pores. But aim to do this mask and steaming combination just once a week, as overuse could result in dryness and irritation – especially for those suffering from inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea.”

The method is incredibly simple – you pick your sheet mask, put it on clean skin and then angle your face in front of a facial steamer for around 10 minutes. Repeat once a week, as Dr Shah recommends.

Many of the UK-based TikTokers seem to be favouring K Facial Facial Steamer, £27.99 here, or Kinga Ionic Facial Steamer from Amazon, £119 here. There are plenty of other options though, ranging from bargain buys to expensive investments.

The particular steamer that Victoria Beckham uses, for example, is Sarah Chapman Pro Hydro Mist Steamer, usually £5 here , which is quite a splurge.

Thankfully though the sheet masks you can pair with a steamer are much more affordable, and you can pick the exact one with ingredients to benefit your specific skin type.
