F1 British Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Verstappen CRASHES OUT after horror smash with Hamilton, race back UNDERWAY – latest

SILVERSTONE is packed with F1 fans ahead of TODAY'S highly-anticipated British Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton is looking to continue his stunning record at this track and stop the Red Bull charge to the title.

Though the Brit will be starting the race from second place on the grid, with championship leader Max Verstappen claiming pole following his win in the inaugural sprint qualifying.

    TOP SIX ARE PULLING AWAY

    The Mercedes, Ferraris and McLarens are putting a bit of a gap back to the midfield now.

    Carlos Sainz in sixth is 4.8 seconds clear of Fernando Alonso in seventh, a gap that is growing while the Spaniard battles Daniel Ricciardo.

    Valtteri Bottas is fighting back at Lando Norris for a place in third – although it is de facto second with Lewis Hamilton's penalty.

    The Brit puts in the fastest lap in his Mercedes as he looks to make up the time.

    BIG JOB ON FOR HAMILTON

    Lewis Hamilton will have to fight his way through the pack after pitting due to that penalty.

    Sergio Perez is also a guy to keep an eye on, starting from the back he is now 14th and on the charge.

    Sebastian Vettel takes his place in 19th, replays show how he just lost control while battling for position and performed a 360.

    We are officially on Lap 3 so let's see how the rest of the pack shook out before the red flag.

    Charles Leclerc now leads the race having jumped Valtteri Bottas at the start.

    Lewis Hamilton is second, pending a potential penalty, with Lando Norris fourth.

    Kimi Raikkonen was the biggest mover, gaining four places into ninth with George Russell down two and 14th.

    The cranes pull away the remains of Max Verstappen's Red Bull, the back end of which has been really churned up.

    MERCS MAKE THEIR CASE

    Mercedes now on the radio to the FIA, insisting Lewis Hamilton WAS allowed to make his move down the inside.

    They say: "Lewis was significantly alongside on the inside at Turn 9."

    THE MOMENT OF THE COLLISION

    Stewards are investigating whether Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen will receive any penalties.

    Red Bull boss Christian Horner tells the FIA over radiO: "He was never ever anywhere near alongside him, that's an enormous accident and that's 100 per cent Max's corner.

    "Lewis should never have been in that position. I hope you're going to deal with that appropriately."

    Lewis Hamilton's radio message immediately after the crash: "Pulling up alongside, it's my line.

    "He turned in on me. I was giving that guy space."

    So, the race has been paused and the drivers are in the pits and getting out of their cars.

    The tyre wall at Copse will have to be repaired after Max Verstappen's car is cleared.

    Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton checks in over radio to make sure Verstappen is okay.

    Lewis Hamilton came up the inside at Copse, was level with Max Verstappen, the Red Bull tried to squeeze him and they made contact.

    A titanic battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton on Lap 1 saw the Dutchman go off the track and into the barrier.

    He's being seen to by medics but is out of the car and standing.

    In comes the Brit, Charles Leclerc leads the race.

    Max Verstappen is out of the car but looks a bit hurt.

    It looks like Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen made contact, sending the Red Bull man into the barrier at Copse.

    That's a high speed hit, hopefully the Dutchman is okay.
