Kamaru Usman next fight: Conor McGregor calls out Nigerian but UFC boss Dana White wants Colby Covington bout

KAMARU USMAN has been called out by Conor McGregor and Colby Covington as Dana White maps out the champion's next move.

After Usman beat Gilbert Burns in February, he personally asked White to rematch Jorge Masvidal, who he already beat last July.

But after Masvidal was emphatically knocked out, the UFC president named Covington as the No1 contender.

White said: "The clear cut guy right now is Colby.

"We'll see how all these other things play out for the next contender, but there's no doubt that Colby Covington is the next guy."

Covington, 33, was stopped by Usman, also 33, in December 2019, but contested the stoppage as early.

He has since switched trainers and returned with a win in September against Tyron Woodley, 39, the man Usman dethroned of the title.

Covington said: “I’m going to take him down into deep waters.

"I’m going to take him down and I’m going to finish him. There are no more fake nut shots next time. I have new coaches now.

"I have a new team behind me. Before, there was so much drama at my old gym.

"People were screaming at me. I couldn’t get my training time in," he continued.

“What has to go different is I have to put a higher pace on him next time. I didn’t put enough pace on him last time and just keep my hands up.

"I know I’m going to get my hand raised when I fight him.”

Despite Covington's hopes of a rematch, McGregor has also vowed to win the welterweight crown.

He returns on July 10 in an immediate rematch with Dustin Poirier, 32, having been KOd by the American in January.

But McGregor has promised to win the lightweight belt before the end of the year while eyeing Usman's throne.

He tweeted: "Usman even copying my shots now. Am I to fight this guy at some stage? I think so.

"Can’t be copying my words and my shots and not get a smack for it. I like 170. It’s mine soon.

"I’m a block at 170 guys. Give me till end of year at this 155 weight. I’ll get the strap and then I’ll go up again."

But Usman hit back: "I offered you the fight and you went missing. Let’s stay humble young man.

"I already took your pride. Don’t make me take your whiskey too."
