Las Palmas star Jonathan Viera's Lamborghini smashed up as his pal 'crashes into tree after mounting pavement'

FORMER Premiership target Jonathan Viera’s Lamborghini was smashed up in a weekend to forget after his side lost 1-0.

The 32-year-old attacking midfielder had to take to social media to deny he was at the wheel of the sports car – and blame the crash on a pal he had lent it to – after photos of the damage emerged.

Viera, who was linked to the likes of Newcastle before he signed for Chinese Super League club Beijing Sinobo Guoan in February 2018, made the admission after current side UD Las Palmas lost at home to Spanish second division rivals Eibar.

He wrote: “Following the publication of pictures in which the consequences of the accident suffered by a car I owned can be observed, I would like to inform those who have expressed concern about my wellbeing that I wasn’t driving the vehicle.

“The car was being driven by a friend, who is fortunately in a perfect state of health.”

Local reports said the Lamborghini had mounted the pavement and hit a tree in an accident in which no other vehicle is thought to have been involved.

Photos showed the front and left wing of the sports car caved in and the pavement in front of the tree badly damaged.

Police were called to the scene of the accident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday in the popular holiday resort of Playa del Ingles in the south of Gran Canaria.

The footballer’s friend, who did not require hospital treatment, has not been named.

Viera and his team-mates are now on holiday until December 27 when they will begin to prepare for their first match of 2022 against local rivals Tenerife.

The footballer, who has played for Valencia and is currently enjoying his third spell with his boyhood club, has one cap for Spain’s Under-21 side and another for the senior team.
