Michael Smith set a new record for the most 180s at the PDC World Darts Championship, despite his defeat to Peter Wright.

Smith, 31, has a reputation as something of a heavy scorer, but no one could have predicted the pounding the treble bed was going to take from Bully Boy at this year's tournament.

The St Helens native had already hit 59 maximums prior to his Alexandra Palace showdown with Wright on Monday night.

But he added another 24 more against Snakebite to take his tally to a record-breaking 83 for the tournament, eclipsing the tally of 71 set by Gary Anderson in 2017.

Smith's incredible 180 hitting was the talk of Twitter, with one person saying: "These 180s from smith are a f****** joke hahahaha."

Someone else added: "F****** ridiculous Michael smith, hitting 180s like it’s no ones business."

A third person commented: "Smith hits 180s for fun its actually scary man."

While a fourth person chimed in with: "Should be illegal to hit as many 180s as Michael Smith."

"Michael Smith is an absolute animal. He’s hitting 180s for fun and looks to have finally sorted his doubles out. Great final, this," claimed another fan.

Wright himself managed 72 180s for the tournament, putting him well clear of Gary Anderson in third who hit just 36.

Despite Smith's superb maximum hitting, it was Snakebite who prevailed on an incredible night of darting drama in north London.

In a game that swung back and forth like a pendulum, Wright held his nerve to win the final three sets and claim a 7-5 victory.

It is the Scotsman's second PDC World Darts Championship win, following his victory over Michael van Gerwen in the 2020 final.

Smith, meanwhile, will now have to pick himself up and go again after a second agonising defeat in the Ally Pally showpiece.
