Michael van Gerwen hits nine-darter in Players Champs final to send crowd wild

Michael van Gerwen delighted darts fans with a brilliant nine-darter as he won the Players Championship in a spectacular final against Rob Cross.

The Green Machine was imperious throughout and needed just three legs to find perfection as he motored towards a 4-1 first session lead. Having already shared the first two legs with Cross, Van Gerwen wasn't in the mood to let his opponent get another one on the board.

After Voltage could only manage to kick off the third leg of the match with a score of 58, MVG rattled in a brilliant 177 to give himself a commanding lead.

Requiring 144 for perfection, the three-time world champion pinned two T20s with deadly accuracy before sticking his final dart right in the corner of the double 12 to send the crowd wild.

Van Gerwen turned to the camera and gave a little fist bump as the thousands of fans packed inside Butlin's Minehead went bananas in the background. As he walked back to take his throw for the next leg, Cross applauded the Dutchman and afforded him a fist bump.

Needless to say, darts fans on social media loved MVG's nine-darter. One fan wrote: "Utterly astonishing from MvG." Another person wrote: "Absolutely glorious."

A third user said: "MVG is f***ing smashing it tonight!" Someone else commented: "When this guy is onnit! No one gets close!" While a fifth fan added: "It’s just simply simply brilliant."

MVG continued his full frontal assault on the darts board as the final went on, opening up with six perfect darts on no fewer than six occasions during the match.

He also took out a brilliant 170 finish with Cross sat on D16 later in the game to knock the stuffing out of the former world champion, eventually going on to win 11-6 in a classic final.
