PDC World Darts Championship – Day 1 tips: Gerwyn Price and Adrian Lewis in action on the opening day

PDC WORLD DARTS CHAMPIONSHIP kicks off on Wednesday with the defending champion Gerwyn Price in action.

There are three matches in total, with Price, Adrian Lewis and Ricky Evans all being odds-on favourites to win on the opening day.

SunSport Day 1 Tips

  • Campbell +1.5 – 11/10
  • Edhouse +2.5 – Evs

Ricky Evans v Nitin Kumar – 20:00

While he hasn’t shone across all stage events, ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans has given plenty of cheer in the Worlds over the years.

Whether it be pulling out the worst dance moves this side of Wayne Mardle or hitting a 180 in the time it takes me to put a full stop on this sentence.

He shouldn’t be troubled by Indian qualifier Nitin Kumar, who has yet to win a set in his past two visits to Ally Pally.

In those games Kumar averaged 77 and 90. Evans’ B game would be enough to win this comfortably and with all of his experience I’d expect the Kettering ace to do a professional job.

With little juice in the market, the match treble of win, most 180s and highest checkout appeals.

Tip: Ricky Evans Match Treble @ 8/11

Adrian Lewis v Matt Campbell – 21:00

One of the standout ties of the first round sees former two-time champ Lewis trying to roll back the years against a dangerous youngster in Canadian Campbell.

The latter had a heart-breaking last leg loss in the first round 12 months ago and will be no pushover.

It was former two-time BDO champ Scott Waites that beat Campbell that time around and after the match, said that he had to play ‘the game of his life’ to win.

If Campbell can play anything like that, he will have chances to take sets.

I think this could go to a few last-leg deciders and if it does, you’d like to think that Campbell aka the ‘Ginja Ninja’ will take the opportunities given.

I wouldn’t advise against 3-2 Lewis with all of the quality he possesses, but I’ll play it safer and take Campbell +1.5 sets on the handicap at an odds-against price.

Tip:Campbell +1.5 Handicap – 11/10

Gerwyn Price v Ritchie Edhouse – 22:00

(This selection is under the assumption that Ritchie Edhouse wins his first round match. If he doesn’t, your bet would be made void and your stake returned.)

All eyes will be on the defending champ on the opening night and for whatever reason, he has struggled when it comes to kicking off the biggest tournament of the year.

His opening matches in the last three years have seen averages of 90, 91 and 89 with two 3-2 wins and a loss to Nathan Aspinall.

Edhouse has nothing to lose and should be heartened by the fact that on his only other Worlds appearance two years ago, he won his opening game.

The road to winning the Worlds is littered with banana skins and potential shocks and while I’m not suggesting that Edhouse pulls off the miraculous, he has a fair chance to take a set.

Tip: Edhouse +2.5 Handicap – Evs
