Peter Wright convinced fans he was about to "storm Old Trafford" in Man Utd kit

Peter Wright convinced fans he was about to "storm Old Trafford" after wearing a familiar outfit during the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay title.

The Scottish darts star faced off against Krzysztof Ratajski in an exhilarating tie-break – but many were more focused on the darts star’s unique attire. Indeed, some were quick to point out how it resembled the Manchester United away kit from a few years back.

One asked: “Why is Peter Wright wearing the Man United away jersey?” Another said: “Peter Wright looks like he either has an anti-Glazer protest coming up or as if he's escaped from Henry Parish's t-shirt.” Someone quipped: “Is Peter Wright playing at the winter gardens or about to storm Old Trafford?”

It was actually United’s third kit for the 2020-21 season that featured the zebra stripes. It was described as ‘visually distinctive’ and even ‘disruptive’ by manufacturers Adidas, the kit's announcement split supporters, with some finding it brash and garish, while others find it more favourable. In any case, the jersey was supposed to serve as a homage to the 110th anniversary of United's first striped kit.

As for Wright, he defeated Ratajski 13-11 on Tuesday night, converting 127 and 125 checkouts before firing in two 11-darters.

"I really enjoyed it," said Wright to Sky Sports. "You need to be in matches like that sometimes to see where you are. That has definitely got me ready for Dimitri now.

"Dimitri is playing really well. He has won two World Series titles recently, he's taken his game to the next level, so it should be another tight game. Bring it on!"

Elsewhere, James Wade was defeated by Nathan Aspinall, while Dimitri Van den Bergh, who won in 2020, beat Rowby-John Rodriguez with an 11-6 win.
