James McClean has been suspended by Stoke City as they look into an alleged breach of Covid-19 restrictions, the club has confirmed.
McClean posted a video to Instagram of what appeared to be himself training in a private gym alongside a boxing coach this week. Under current UK-wide guidelines, gym visits are strictly prohibited.
The club confirmed that McClean will now miss their Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers while the issue is investigated.

A statement from Stoke read: ‘Stoke City can confirm that James McClean has been suspended with immediate effect pending a disciplinary hearing into an alleged breach of COVID-19 regulations, namely training in a private gym.
‘As a result of the suspension, McClean will not be available for selection for Saturday’s game against Blackburn Rovers.’
McClean has made 16 appearances for Michael O’Neill’s side so far this season in the Championship, scoring twice as they look to battle their way into the play-off places.

In the Republic of Ireland international’s absence, there is an opportunity for two new faces to take their chance this weekend against Rovers.
Rabbi Motondo made his debut following his loan move from Schalke against Leicester City in the FA Cup third round, coming off the bench in the 4-0 defeat, and could be handed a start.
Jack Clarke has also joined the club on loan from Tottenham until the end of the season.
