A small but select field for the Challow at Newbury, a race won by the likes of Denman, Reve De Sivola and Champ in the past.

All eyes will be on Paul Nicholls' upwardly-mobile five-year-old Bravemansgame, but conditions are likely to be far from ideal for him.

And I reckon the unbeaten STAR GATE (3.15 Newbury) could have his measure anyway.

Evan Williams' exciting youngster made it 2-2 under Rules with a hugely impressive success in a heavy ground Grade 2 at Sandown earlier this month.

He left some useful horses for dead when storming up the Sandown hill and the form of his earlier Chepstow win was recently franked.

His usually pessimistic trainer, who has his yard in cracking form and enjoyed a Grade 1 winner at Kempton on Boxing Day, has been uncharacteristically bullish about him.

The ground will be very testing at Newbury, so Star Gate's proven ability to handle tough going can tip the balance in his favour, seeing as Bravemansgame's recent improvement has come on a sound surface.

In the final race on ITV, back FUNAMBULE SIVOLA (3.45 Newbury) to put his recent Sandown flop behind him.

The lightly-raced five-year-old ran out an impressive winner over two miles at Wetherby in November following a wind op.

He was a beaten favourite when turned out quickly under a penalty at the Tingle Creek meeting, but he made a couple of fiddly mistakes and didn't appear to get home upped to 2m4f.

He drops back down in class and trip here, and the return to a flat, left-handed track looks a shrewd move.

Venetia Williams' horses usually come into their own when the mud is flying at this time of year, and a couple of recent easy winners suggest the yard is coming to the boil on schedule.

This is only his third start over fences and he has only had a handful of starts, so there is surely more to come.
