13 Reasons Why title card: Who is Steve Golin? Why is season 3 dedicated to him?

Steve Golin may not be a name familiar to many 13 Reasons Why fans but he clearly had an impact on the cast and crew. So much so, the first episode of season three is dedicated in his memory. The Netflix series describes him as a “hero, mentor (and) friend”, but who is he?

Who is Steve Golin from 13 Reasons Why?

Steve Golin was an Oscar-winning movie and TV producer from the USA.

His CV boasts behind-the-scenes roles in Spotlight, The Revenant and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

Away from the big screen, however, he worked as an executive producer on 13 Reasons Why throughout seasons one and two.

His death came as a shock to many and his memory was honoured with a title card in the very first episode of season three.

Golin sadly passed away on April 21, 2019, in Los Angeles.

The New York Times reports his cause of death was Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

He was 64-years-old when he died and the impact of his death was felt throughout Hollywood.

A number of big-name actors, directors and other in-between came forward to pay tribute to the producer.

Jim Carrey, who starred in Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind said of Golin: “Steve Golin was a brilliant producer who cared deeply for the quality of his craft. I will always appreciate his unflinching support of a bunch of wildlings who ran through the streets of New York while filming Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind — with and without permits.

“I will also remember his personal bravery along with his tremendous contribution to the art form that he loved.”

13 Reasons why produced Joy Gorman Wettels said at the time of his death: “He was hilarious. He was the most salt-of-the-earth, no-b******* person you’ve ever met.

“A lot of people said they were disarmed by how un-Hollywood he was for somebody so powerful.

“But he was extremely modest. He didn’t realise what a visionary he was. He just loved what he did.”

Other stars including Michael Keaton and award-winning director Alejandro G Iñárritu also came forward to praise the producer.

Golin’s memory was best summed up in the final moments of the season three premiere.

13 Reasons Why simply yet effectively referred to him as a “hero, mentor (and) friend.”

13 Reasons Why season 3 is available to stream on Netflix now.
