Angela Rippon admits ‘intense’ Strictly training causes ‘bruises’
Angela and Kai talk about Strictly rehearsals
Angela Rippon and partner Kai Widdrington took time out from “intense” rehearsals for their first Strictly dance to enjoy the glitz and glamour of afternoon tea.
The pair got “suited and booted” for Kai’s first visit to the Ritz Hotel in London. The professional dancer, 28, joked it was “somewhere very low-key as a reward to ourselves”.
And TV presenter Angela, 78, was beaming as she told him to get ready for “tiny, tiny, tiny” cucumber sandwiches and “gorgeous cakes”.
However, she seemed disappointed when Kai said they couldn’t wash down the treats with glasses of champagne as there was still work to do for their cha-cha to Shirley Bassey’s Get The Party Started.
Former BBC newsreader Angela – who famously showed off her dancer’s legs on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show in 1976 – is the oldest contestant in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line-up.

She says training sessions so far have been “intense and up to six hours at a stretch”, adding: “I ache everywhere. Have bruises in impossible places. Sweat buckets.
“Nothing quite prepares you for what being ‘Strictly-fied’ means until you are up to your neck in sequins, tanning, the frocks and sheer physical, emotional and mental demands of being a “celebrity” competitor in the BBC’s most popular prime-time show.”
Angela admitted part of her wished she had been asked to do it 10 years ago when she was “younger and fitter”. She has been using ice baths to help ease any pain.
Also showing off their moves from the first week of training is bookies’ favourite Bobby Brazier – son of the late reality star Jade Goody.
