Batman Movie Producer Michael E. Uslan Wants A Mr. Freeze Standalone Film

The success of Todd Phillips’ Joker (2019), which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Prime, has led countless fans and pundits to dream of other standalone films based on DC Comics villains.

Catwoman and Joker are the lone primary members of the Batman Rogues Gallery to have received their own live action standalone films. Halle Berry starred as the former in the 2004 film, Catwoman.

15 years later, Joker – perhaps the most iconic comic book villain of them all – finally received his own standalone film. And Phillips has even brought up the possibility of doing a Joker sequel down the road.

If not Joker, which other Batman villains could receive a standalone film down the road? Why not Mr. Freeze, one of the more popular characters in the Rogues Gallery?

A Mr. Freeze standalone film is something that Michael E. Uslan, a veteran Batman movie and cartoon producer, would like to see. Uslan’s credits include Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns, Batman Forever (1995), Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).

During an interview with Wizard World (h/t Movie Web), Uslan explained why he thinks the Mr. Freeze character deserves its own standalone movie.

“One of my favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, which I absolutely love, dealt with Mr. Freeze and the loss of his wife,” Uslan said. “The empathy, the emotions that that created. I’m putting on my fanboy hat, not my producing hat. This has nothing to do with any plans. It’s just that, as a fanboy, I could see taking that iteration of Mr. Freeze and doing something amazing with his backstory.”

Mr. Freeze has only appeared in one Batman live action film. That would be Batman & Robin (1997), which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the merciless villain. That film, of course, was heavily panned by critics. Here we are 23 years later, and the character has yet to be featured in another live action movie.

That said, Mr. Freeze was a primary villain in the Gotham television series on FOX, and in the Batman: Arkham video game series.

Christopher Nolan never included Mr. Freeze in his Dark Knight Trilogy. Zack Snyder didn’t for his two Batman films. Could Matt Reeves include Mr. Freeze in his Batman universe? Only time will tell, but to many, it’s long overdue for the character to appear in another film.
