Channel 4’s classic soap Brookside is set to return to TV screens this summer, as a carefully chosen number of classic episodes will be available to stream on streaming service BritBox.

The app announced the news with details of what their subscribers can expect.

Britbox’s SoapBox section will add in the gritty Liverpool soap, where it will sit alongside episodes of other old daytime drama Crossroads.

Brookside, which came to an end years ago, first debuted on Channel 4 back in 1982.

After over two decades delivering thrilling storylines and shocking twists and turns on the famous Liverpudlian street, it came to an end in 2003.

Last year, a diehard fan of the former Channel 4 staple created a petition to get the channel to release all of the episodes on DVD.

Lee Brady was already known as the man who won a campaign to get Brookside’s greatest hits put out on a boxset, as fans rejoiced at finally getting to relive their favourite show.

After his latest attempt in 2020, the hardcore fan hoped that if he didn’t successfully achieve his first goal then streaming services would air some of the soap’s episodes instead.

Lee shared: “There’s a huge nostalgia around it and there’s not much on YouTube but Brookside was always ahead of its time.

“Streaming would be an option too, like what ITV are doing,” he continued to

“One of my mates is trying to get them either streaming or repeats on TV.”

The soap-watcher went on to insist he believes Brookside could entice a brand new “generation” too.

Being the only soap ever based in Liverpool, there are plenty of fans with a connection to the local area who would potentially tune in for that reason alone.

“They could really get into it, Brookside had that gritty edge, which a lot of people enjoy in their dramas right now,” Lee added to the publication.

What’s more, perhaps the reintroduction of the beloved soap on TV again could spark a desire for a return with completely new episodes one day.

Fans will have to wait and see.
