On Wednesday, she defended one of this year’s campmates, Boy George, over criticism he faced online following last night’s episode. The singer became tense on the ITV show about not being given any tasks, but at the same time complained he wouldn’t be “told what to do”. Appearing on This Morning, former Countdown star Carol said the public had reacted “cruelly”.

The former contestant sat opposite This Morning’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield to discuss this year’s series of the hit reality show.

Boy George’s manager, Paul Kemsley, also joined the group to chat about the ITV series.

The four discussed rows brewing in the camp amid growing tensions between the Karma Chameleon singer and Loose Women star, Charlene White.

It came as Charlene continued to take charge of the cooking during Tuesday’s episode, causing George to become frustrated and brand her “controlling”.

As Carol reflected on her own experience, she told the This Morning viewers: “When you’re actually in the jungle, yeah, you do get a little bit bored.

“But I mean, he [Boy George] was saying, ‘Nobody tells me what to do!’ [and later]  ‘Well, tell me what you want me to do then.’

“And social media was pretty cruel about it, I have to say.”

“Listen,” Paul cut in. “It’s so tough to watch it when you love someone as much as I love him.

“And I’m sitting here thinking, four weeks ago he was playing in front of 100,000 people and now he’s in a water tank half drowning.”

Boy George and Chris Moyles took part in a trial on Monday which saw them trapped inside a small space which was rapidly filling with water.

He has since avoided any more Bushtucker Trials but seemed disappointed to learn at the end of Tuesday’s episode that none of the current campmates would be participating in one because two new celebrities would be the ones tasked with collecting stars for camp.

“I wanted to get out today,” he could be heard saying after hists Ant and Dec delivered the news.

Speaking in the Bush Telegraph during last night’s episode, Boy George commented: “It’s so weird, that [food] bag comes down and Charlene just turns into an entirely different person.

“It’s amazing, she issues orders and tells everyone what to do. I’m like, ‘Wow’. You know, it’s like, ‘Who are you?’

“Charlene she just issues orders. For me as an observer of my own feelings, it’s mind-blowing.”

Speaking later to Scarlette Douglas, he added: “I just feel like Charlene’s very controlling.

“She tells you what to do and it really rubs you up the wrong way.”

“I’m struggling with that, but I’ll get over it. It’s fine, she’s very sweet as well so it’s a real contradiction.

“There’s this controlling side and then there’s this caring side and it confuses me.”

He later pointed out that he hadn’t been “told” what to help out with around the camp.

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues on Wednesday at 9pm on ITV.
