No-nonsense character Evelyn Plummer (played by Maureen Lipman) showed her softer side on Wednesday’s Coronation Street when her beloved greyhound, Cerberus, had to be put down. The adorable dog tugged at the heartstrings as he lay motionless on Evelyn’s sofa, and after taking him to the vets, the staple ITV soap character heard the news all pet owners dread, that the kindest thing would be for the dog to be put to sleep.

Evelyn’s loyal greyhound has been by her side for years, and at 10 years old, he’d lived a long life for a dog.

Sadly, it turned out that Roy Cropper (David Neilson) was partly at fault for the dog’s death because he’d dropped an Eccles cake on the floor of his cafe and believes Cerberus could have eaten it.

Currents are toxic to dogs, so the baked treat could well have been what led to Cerberus’ death.

Evelyn had initially been reluctant to take her dog to the vet, seemingly dreading what she might find out.

After some persuasion from the vets and her grandson Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) though, she agreed it was the best thing to do.

“You’ve always done right by him, nan,” Tyrone pointed out.

“And I don’t intend to stop now,” she commented as a lifeless Cerberus lay at her feet at the surgery.

After a long pause, an emotional Evelyn remarked: “Ok…ok… I don’t want to see him suffer.”

“It’s the right thing to do,” the veterinarian assured her. The favourite character then sat down beside her dog for a final goodbye.

“You can see how noble he is, can’t you?” She asked as a tearful Tyrone nodded.

“He’s a proper legend,” he replied before Evelyn added: “In sickness and in health.”

She continued: “Nothing but unconditional love and unquestioning loyalty,” before placing a blanket around the greyhound.

Evelyn sobbed as she hugged Cerberus while he whined in pain.

Later, a scene showed the devastated dog owner issuing a final farewell as the pooch breathed his last breath.

Evelyn wasn’t the only one in floods of tears as Coronation Street viewers soon took to social media to share their emotions over the episode.

Twitter user @SkillsChannelTV wrote: “Corrie has a string of incredibly ridiculous storylines yet the death of a dog is what great Corrie stories used to be like. I will stop crying soon. #Corrie.”
