Gail (played by Helen Worth) left Coronation Street a few weeks ago after suffering from a heart attack, brought on by (just check that’s right!) her family’s ever dramatic and troublesome lives. It’s not been confirmed when the matriarch of the Platt clan will return to the ITV soap, having told her loved ones she was going to spend some time in Thailand. However, as the stalwart gets the itch to go travelling around some more countries, she could bump into her ex-husband Martin (Sean Wilson) and as one thing leads to another, an affair could see him make a comeback to the cobbles.

During his first 20 year stint on the cobbles, Martin was involved in some high profile storylines as he was embedded within the core of the Platt family.

The former character is the father of David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) and also adopted Gail’s other two children, Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) when their dad passed away.

It’s fair to say Martin was quite the love rat, having had three other romances during his time in Weatherfield, one of which was with 16-year-old Katie Harris (Lucy-Jo Hudson).

After saving his ex-wife from the hands of the serial killer, Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) and being a prime suspect in the death of his young lover, Katie, the Casanova of the cobbles made his exit from the show.

He left alongside his lover at the time, Robyn (Clare Calbraith) and it’s been explained in passing he has had a child with her called Charlotte.

In 2018 and following his son David being raped by Josh Tucker (Ryan Clayton), Martin made a brief return.

The father of two explained he was moving to New Zealand with his family and wasn’t too sure if he would ever return to the UK.

Ever since Gail’s ex-husband hasn’t been mentioned by the family but the stalwart could venture over to New Zealand on her travels and discover everything isn’t going as well as he’d hoped.

Martin could explain to his ex-wife his relationship with Robyn had broken down and they have grown distant since moving overseas.

With Gail also feeling lonely without a partner, the pair could reignite the passion they once had and begin an affair.

I’d definitely be up for it

The stalwart’s family back in the UK would have no idea what she is up to and be shocked when she returns with Martin later this year.

David might be the only one pleased to see his parents reunited but Nick and Sarah could have very different opinions.

Although she had a really strong father-daughter relationship with her adoptive father, Sarah could be worried about whether he would cheat on her mother again.

Nick was always a bit hostile towards him, believing Martin would never replace his own father, Brian Tilsley (Christopher Quinten).

Despite the opposition, Gail could tell her family they’re going to have to get used to it as she wants to give the relationship another go.

Fans could be pleased to see Martin back on the cobbles after so long, as he was voted as Gail’s best husband in an online poll.

According to the data published by Digital Spy, the results show 71 percent of the voters believed Martin was the one for Gail.

Serial killer Richard came in at number two with 17 percent of the vote and the late Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis) came in at number three with five percent.

With so much support behind David’s father, bosses could consider bringing the beloved character back for the third time.

One viewer wrote in response to the results: “Part of me wants to say Martin [was the best husband] because they were together so long and he didn’t try to kill her, fake his own death, con her, etc.”

“Although he did cheat on her. Until then, I think it was her most stable relationship,” they continued to explain.

Another posted: “I’ve voted Martin. Yeah, they had their ups and downs but he took on two children from a previous marriage.

“He also had to deal with Brian’s mother who was a right battle-axe,” they shared as a third added: “Martin was lucky to escape with his life.”

“Watching episodes of classic Corrie I have to say Martin. Very realistic and believable relationship and they seemed very happy (until the affair),” a fourth explained.

“Had Martin not cheated, they’d probably have been together a lot longer,” they continued.

The actor who played Martin, Sean, has spoken out on whether he would ever reprise his iconic role for the third time.

Following his stint on the show in 2018, the soap star said: “I had lots of thinking time. There’s so much depth there.

“I would have thought editorially it would have to be thought about that he came back again but whether they act upon it is completely up to the powers that be.

“I’d definitely be up for it,” he told Metro.co.uk so could viewers see him back on the cobbles as Gail’s new man?

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7:30pm on ITV.
