Emmerdale fans distracted from Liam’s proposal by ‘ridiculous’ distancing
Emmerdale favourite Doctor Liam Cavanagh (played by Jonny McPherson) had planned the “perfect” proposal to his girlfriend Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) during tonight’s episode of the ITV soap, but fans were left underwhelmed.
Despite Meena’s interference threatening to ruin Liam’s big moment with the wedding planner, the doctor managed to bring the romance back.
And yet fans were so puzzled by the difference to a usual marriage proposal due to the soap’s unfortunate coronavirus restrictions.
All the actors have to social distance, and while producers have been creative in their workarounds for various scenes, Liam and Leyla’s lovely scene ended in an anti-climax.
There was no hug, no kiss, and the newly-engaged couple were only able to muster an emotional gaze.
Taking to Twitter to criticise the “weird” proposal, viewers weren’t impressed.
“The social distancing in #emmerdale is ridiculous,” one person wrote.
Another posted: “That was weird, they usually hug or kiss after a proposal. #Emmerdale.”
“Socially distanced engagement scenes don't work very well, do they #emmerdale,” a third commented.
While a fourth was confused when fellow ITV soap Coronation Street managed a hug during a similar scene.
“What no hug #Corrie had a kiss. Surely could have pushed for a hug #Emmerdale,” the fan said.
Others were still happy for the couple, but concerned with the knowledge that Liam’s ex Bernice Blackstock is due back in the Dales.
“I’m in a predicament, I love Leyla and Liam together but I also love Bernice and Liam together too. #Emmerdale,” one person wrote.
Another added: “I think that was a yes #Emmerdale.”
Emmerdale continues weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
