Emmerdale viewers have hit out over Marshall Hamston’s (played by Max Fletcher) “rushed” exit on the ITV soap which happened during the latest instalment.

The character, who was in a relationship with Arthur Thomas (Alfie Clarke) made his exit after Laurel Thomas’ (Charlotte Bellamy) hen do and Jai Sharma’s (Chris Bisson) stag do.

He was looking distant and stepped outside to tell Jai and Laurel he had “not been happy for a long time” with Arthur.

ITV viewers were left baffled by his abrupt exit at the end of the episode, with many taking to Twitter to comment.

Matthew Zee-Miller wrote: “After building up the character and back story with the horrible dad, very weak exit very rushed #emmerdale.”

@TwellyWatcher added: “Marshall left the Dales tonight. Wonder if he’ll be back and how this will affect Arthur in the future. Lovely character. Wishing the actor who played him all the best! Very talented young performer #Emmerdale.”

Annie wrote: “So Marshall is leaving only telling those he lives with now… Sounds just like when the writers of #Emmerdale forgot how to write a story for the audience and things apparently happened off-screen. P.s I like wee Marshall, I would’ve preferred he stayed over others.”

Eileen added: “Who else knew that Marshall and Arthur would end this way? It was too much, too soon and he was completely overwhelmed by it all. #Emmerdale.”

Michelle penned: “Marshall and Arthur saying goodbye got me emotional. I liked them together #Emmerdale.”

Stephen said: “The Marshall and Arthur storyline was #Emmerdale’s best this year and it was handled so well – this is like such strange turnaround now, was hoping they’d get a happy ending.”

Marshall told Jai and Laurel he was leaving later that day to go and live with his auntie away from Emmerdale.

Jai advised him to be honest with Arthur about how he didn’t want to be in a relationship any more.

Arthur was left heartbroken when Marshall broke the news to him as he deeply loved the character who he’d grown close to over the past year.

Later on, Marshall gave Arthur a long hug and tearfully said: “I’m really going to miss you.”

Marshall was then driven out of the village in his auntie’s car as a crushed Arthur watched on.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
