Over the last few months, Emmerdale’s Charles Anderson (played by Kevin Mathurin) has been struggling with the trauma of Andrea Tate’s (Anna Nightingale) death. He’s also been battling his feelings for Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) whilst dealing with his ex-wife Esme’s (Eva Fontaine) arrival. Could the guilt and strain of keeping up pretences become too much for Charles, resulting in him leaving the ITV soap behind?
On Tuesday night’s episode, Charles seemed to drop a hint to Manpreet which could see him leave the village very soon.
Whilst speaking to Manpreet about his son Ethan Anderson’s (Emile John) relationship with his mother, the pair reflected on their own relationship.
Sat side by side looking out into the field, Manpreet praised him and said: “You’re a good man, Charles.
“Kind and loving, why do you think I was with you all those years ago? Dashing good looks aside.”
As the pair laughed, Charles replied: “You always know the right thing to say,” then presenting her with a flask which prompted them to speak about their time together.
Still reminiscing over their memories, Charles began to lean over Manpreet to grab the lid of the flask, however, Manpreet took this as a chance to lean in for a kiss.
Shocked at her gesture, Charles moved away and left Manpreet feeling embarrassed as they sat in silence.
Later in the episode, the pair are seen walking back from their awkward conversation, to which Manpreet said: “I don’t know what came over me.”
Charles comforted her and said: “I do. You’re getting divorced, you’re staying at the B&B, everything is up in the air.
“You’re not in a good place, and to be honest with you, neither am I.
“We can’t afford to trust our feelings at the moment, no matter how powerful they are,” he explained.
Charles continued: “I feel like I’m on some kind of rollercoaster, and the more I try to get off, I can’t, have been since it happened.
“And then there’s all this stuff with Esme and Naomi, I really need some respite, some space from all of it.”
Could this mean Charles will soon leave the village to get away from the drama?
Will Manpreet decide to go with him and work on their relationship?
After all, it seems all over Charles’ problems have arisen from the reminders of his past in the village.
Following on from his confession on needing space, Charles also revealed he still had feelings for Manpreet.
“I’m sorry,” Manpreet said: “It won’t happen again, okay? Will not happen again,” but as she went to walk away, Charles called her back.
“Don’t run off, please. I genuinely don’t want you to go, you know I’ve still got feelings for you, I admitted it the day she died.”
Not believing him, Manpreet fired back: “You were injured, your emotions were running high.”
However, Charles interrupted and revealed: “Manpreet, I never stopped loving you, even when I saw you outside that café after so many years, I was angry, yes, but at that moment all I wanted to do was hold you.
“I’m in love with you, I always have been there, I’ve said it.”
Could the pair soon rekindle their romance with one another?
Emmerdale airs weekdays from 7pm on ITV.
