Forgotten EastEnders storylines – from Martin kidnapping Ben to Shirley’s secret
EastEnders is pulling out all the stops at the moment, with some huge storylines on the way including Whitney and Callum's wedding, and Hunter Owen's revenge.
But this is nothing new, with the BBC soap often airing some hugely shocking, dramatic, controversial and exciting storylines.
There's been the usual deaths, births and marriages, but the also soap as explored a number of different topics for their plots.
With so many characters past and present, it's very easy to forget some of the biggest plots that have happened in Walford ever since the soap started. Here's a look back at just a handful of moments you might have forgotten about…
Ian's unforgivable lie to wife Mel is exposed in dramatic wedding
Ian and Mel get on just fine now as pals, but back in 1999 the pair were dating and even got married.
However, it all went wrong though when Ian's shocking lie about daughter Lucy came to light.
Mel only stayed with Ian because he told her Lucy had cancer, and she felt sorry for him and wanted to look after her stepdaughter.
But on the wedding day, it was all revealed to be a lie leading to one of the most dramatic splits on the soap ever.
Mel powerfully took her tiara off, before marching down the market having just told Ian she didn't love him, as the New Year fireworks were set off – and it was brilliant.
Mitchell and Fowler feud including Martin kidnapping Ben
The Mitchells and the Fowlers have been a part of a long-running feud in many ways, despite them getting along from time to time.
Lisa Fowler, wife of Mark, was trying to flee the country with ex Phil's baby daughter Louise – and Phil's relative Jamie Mitchell and girlfriend Sonia helped her with her bid.
When Phil found out he beat up Jamie and they were torn apart until his shock death shortly after. This in turn started a new Fowler feud, as Phil blamed Martin over Jamie's death, after he accidentally ran him over.
Martin's current wife Stacey Fowler recently attacked Phil, hitting him over the head and leaving him for dead – while she killed her rapist Archie Mitchell back in 2010 when she did the same thing to him.
Other fallouts between the two families include Phil's current wife Sharon learning that her best mate Michelle Fowler had a fling, and a baby, with her father Den Watts.
Then there was Martin kidnapping a young Ben Mitchell and threatening him on the train tracks after another fallout with Phil.
Kathy's death and resurrection
EastEnders fans were shocked to their core when it was revealed Kathy Beale had been killed off off-screen back in 2006.
The death left her sons Ian Beale and Ben Mitchell distraught, and it changed Walford forever.
But viewers were left equally shocked when during a live episode in 2015, she returned from the dead – with her remaining in Walford ever since.
It turns out Phil knew somewhere along the way that ex Kathy was still alive, with him meeting up with her in her return scene.
She explained that she faked her death with then husband Gavin Sullivan, and was forced to leave Ben behind.
It took a while, but her children eventually forgave her.
Jack Branning and Sharon Mitchell's romance
Sharon is currently at the centre of a shock baby storyline, after cheating on husband Phil Mitchell with Keanu Taylor.
Keanu is the dad of her unborn baby, something Phil is yet to learn – while Keanu is also expecting a baby with his girlfriend Louise Mitchell, the daughter of Phil.
But remember a time when Sharon was super happy with none other than Jack Branning?
It's a distant memory now, but back in 2013 the club owners were preparing to tie the knot.
At one point they looked as though they could be the real deal, only for his ex Ronnie Mitchell to come between them.
She ended up calling off the wedding, with Jack eventually reuniting with Ronnie before her tragic death in 2017.
Mel Owen's kidnap horor
Mel is often getting herself into trouble, and his currently hiding her criminal son Hunter Owen from the police.
There was also a time where her marriage to Hunter's father Steve Owen left her caught in the crossfire.
While she can more than handle herself now, she was left relying on Phil Mitchell back in the day when villain, and Steve's enemy, Dan Sullivan kidnapped her and held her hostage.
She was tied up and kept in a house for days, until eventually being rescued in dramatic scenes.
Shirley was initially Mick Carter's sister
The final nod to the past this week wasn't that long ago, but it certainly changed everything.
Shirley was on the soap for a while when her brother Mick Carter, sister Tina Carter and their family joined her in Walford.
But it wasn't revealed until later that Shirley wasn't Mick's sister after all – she was his mother.
The pair are super close now and were able to get past the huge family secret, but at the time it tore them apart.
Mick was devastated she had lied to him all those years, with Tina also unaware that she was Mick's aunt and not his sister.
EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
