Joining Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, Miriam revealed her mother Ruth would complete the housework completely nude. The Call the Midwife guest star recalled being left shocked by her mother’s behaviour and added her father wasn’t too impressed either but over time she got used to it. However, she admitted she is yet to follow in Ruth’s footsteps, joking she “doesn’t do it”.
When asked by Phillip about her mother’s cleaning routine, Miriam remarked: “It did surprise the au pair girls a bit.
“Daddy was a bit distressed by it. I got used to it. I don’t do it. I don’t do anything but I wouldn’t do any of that.”
She continued: “It was a bit outrageous.”
Speaking of her mother, Miriam admitted she “always felt guilty” for coming out as gay to Heather, explaining: “She couldn’t handle it and I think it was too much for her.
“That’s why I say people shouldn’t come out to people who can’t handle it. When I fell in love, I wanted to tell everyone I was in love. We’ve been together 53 years.”
Miriam has been in a relationship with Heather Sutherland since 1968.
Elsewhere in the candid interview, Miriam said she regrets being the first woman to swear on TV during an appearance on University Challenge.
“I was, I’m not proud of it,” she confessed. “It was university challenge and I got an answer wrong.
“You’re exposed in front of everyone and I don’t like that.”
Miriam recalled recently bumping into Bamber Gascoigne, the original presenter of the BBC series, and was “thrilled” to hear he remembered her appearance.
