Kay Burley shares disappointment in Charles over Diana betrayal

James Cleverly quizzed by Kay Burley over NI deal

Kay Burley, 62, is hosting a three-part Sky News podcast called Queen Camilla: For the Love of Charles in the run-up to King Charles III’s Coronation.

The series explores Queen Camilla’s roots and follows her and the King’s relationship and how it developed over the decades.

Kay will be at the heart of the Coronation on Saturday, stationed among the crowds outside of Buckingham Palace from early in the morning.

More than four decades have passed since Kay first reported on one of the central moments in the King’s life – his 1981 wedding to the late Princess Diana.

Kay was a 20-year-old junior reporter at the time working on the Evening Post and Chronicle in Wigan during the spectacle which saw the 32-year-old Prince of Wales marry a 20-year-old Diana.

They tied the knot in St Paul’s Cathedral, in central London, and the wedding was reportedly watched by 750 million around the world.

Among the guests were Camilla and her then-husband Andrew Parker Bowles.

Reflecting on the ceremony and seeing Diana in her iconic Elizabeth Emanuel wedding dress, Kay told Radio Times: “From the office, I wrote a report about how beautiful Diana was.

“When stories about Camilla’s involvement with Charles emerged throughout the 1980s, I was disappointed – the prince running off with someone else wasn’t part of the script.

“But it wasn’t generally thought the marriage would actually break down until Diana chose to be photographed alone at the Taj Mahal in early 1992, by which time I’d been working at Sky for several years.

“She obviously was playing it for the photographers, but you could see the hurt on her face.

“Ten months later came their separation, which was unsurprising yet still shocking.”

Diana and King Charles divorced on August 28, 1996, and she tragically died in a car crash a year later aged 36.

An estimated 2.5 billion people watched Diana’s funeral across the globe as her children Prince William and Prince Harry had to walk behind their mother’s coffin in the procession.

Years after her untimely death, King Charles and Camilla got engaged in February 2005 and were married two months later.

Camilla was 57 years old when they exchanged their vows at a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall.

Kay’s full interview is available to read in this week’s edition of Radio Times.
