Marcella season 3 release date: When will Marcella series 3 air?
Marcella: Jane Colletti revealed as killer in dark revelation
Fans of British crime drama Marcella have been waiting for the show’s return for some time. Season two wrapped up in 2018 and left viewers with many questions but finally the series is coming back for another outing. Creator Hans Rosenfeldt and lead star Anna Friel spoke to Express.co.uk and other media about the show’s final run.
When will Marcella season 3 air?
ITV has confirmed Marcella season three will start on Tuesday, January 2 at 9pm.
The eight-part series is going to be airing weekly but ITV is also making the whole run available in one go on the ITV Hub following the airing of the first episode.
Sadly, season three is confirmed to be the last outing for the troubled police detective and will be taking a very different direction to its predecessors.
British fans have had to wait some time for the new series, which has already aired in other nations across the globe on Netflix.

Part of the reason for the delay on Marcella was also down to the coronavirus pandemic, which had a knock-on effect on most ITV drama and led to lots of schedule movement for shows.
Marcella was initially described as a “London noir” when it first launched back in 2016, but it is has now subsequently evolved.
The show will be set in Northern Ireland as Marcella Backland (played Anna Friel) finds herself undercover and on a new mission.
Instead of investigating a murder this time, she will be trying to take down a notorious crime family from the inside.
Marcella will be playing a dangerous game as she pretends to be Keira and ingratiates herself with this mob family, perhaps enjoying her new persona a little bit too much.
Speaking to Express.co.uk exclusively about the forthcoming run, creator Rosenfeldt said: “When we got to series two, we thought one more would be great because then we could wrap it up and bring in home.
“So we hoped for a series three when we ended series two – but we’ve always – or at least since series two – always thought that we should do three. It should be a trilogy but then we’re done.”
The creator of The Bridge added: “There is an ending to it in the last episode of series three.”
Addressing the move away from a London noir, the acclaimed writer said: “We wanted that. We kept the core DNA of Marcella and her personal journey – it’s still a crime show but it’s not a serial killer hunt anymore.
“So it is a kind of reinvention of the show but I always thought it was a good thing because I think the rather dark, rather gloomy serial killer chase in big cities, there’s been quite a few of them since we started both with The Bridge and with Marcella.”
Rosenfeldt also felt after the events of season two, it would be impossible to bring her back into the police in the same capacity as before in London.
He said he and other members of the crew were thinking about trying something different, saying: “I was happy with the new direction.”
There is a time jump between the end of the second outing and the start of the third outing and Friel addressed this, saying: “We jump into about a year later after what happened from that incident.”
But she promised in episode six viewers would be taken back and find out what happened during this time.
She said: “You don’t meet Marcella until about episode five. You meet Keira. I simultaneously play two characters.”
Friel said the “biggest difficultly” of season three was how to approach Kiera as a character because the show wasn’t shot in chronological order.
She also teased her character’s look changed throughout the series with multiple hair and make-up shifts, hinting at a constantly evolving Marcella/Keira.
