Mariah Carey admits her affair with Yankees legend Derek Jeter was the ‘catalyst’ to ending her first marriage – The Sun

MARIAH Carey has revealed her affair with Derek Jeter was the "catalyst" to ending her first marriage to producer Tommy Mottola.

The superstar, 50, struck up a fling with the Yankees legend towards the end of her relationship with Tommy, who she was wed to from 1993 to 1998.

Mariah began her relationship with Tommy in 1991 when she was 21. Tommy, now 71, was the head of Sony Music at the time.

She said that while Derek wasn't the "love of her life", they did have a "beautiful relationship" which helped her realize she needed to end things with Tommy.

The Hero hitmaker opened up about their fling in an upcoming episode of The Oprah Conversation with Oprah Winfrey.

Mariah admitted: "He was a catalyst that helped me get out of that relationship, because I had believed that there was somebody else."

She added that Derek's "functional" family helped her reflect on her own family's biracial identity.

"It was the racial situation, his mom is Irish, his dad is Black. But he was also very ambiguous looking to me. I didn’t know who he was," Mariah said.

"We met and I’ve written songs about it, and honestly, I don’t think it was like: 'Oh my gosh, he was the love of my life.'

"At the time I did, because I didn’t think I would ever meet anybody who wouldn’t feel superior to me because of the fact that I’m not one way or the other in most people’s minds, and they have preconceived notions, whatever."

The pop sensation went on: "But he was a catalyst, and I think that it was beautiful, and his family was a healthy family and they changed my viewpoint that: 'Oh, it’s because of the biracial situation that my family’s so screwed up,' as opposed to: 'It’s them.'

"It was healthy for me to see a functional family, that, you know, basically kind of looked like mine but didn’t feel like mine.

"And he was also living his dream job and doing his dream job and stuff, you know. I believe we connected in that way."

Mariah reveals in her upcoming memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that she met Derek at a dinner party.

The pair started "secretly" seeing each other while her marriage to Tommy was coming to an end, and she wrote the songs My All and The Roof for Derek.

Derek married his wife Hannah in 2016 and they have two daughters together.

Music mogul Tommy admitted his relationship with Mariah was “absolutely wrong and inappropriate," in his 2013 memoir, Hitmaker: The Man and His Music,

He added: “If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success.”

Mariah split with Tommy in 1998 and married Nick Cannon in 2008.

They have nine-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe and divorced in 2016.
