On Sunday’s instalment of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, the host welcomed guests Arlene Phillips and Martin Clunes onto the show. During his conversation with Martin, the duo spoke about the drama coming to an end after 18 years. Althoug fans can see the Doctor one last time in the upcoming festive special.

Last month, the long-running ITV drama finally came to an end after 10 seasons spreading across 18 years.

In the last episode, viewers watched as the doctor decided not to move to London and stay in the small fishing village of Portwenn much to the delight of everyone in the village.

It concluded with him picking up the ‘For Sale’ sign outside of his surgery as he chucked it into the sea.

With many left emotional knowing this was the end of Doc Martin, fans are anticipating the Christmas special where they can see the doc, his family and Portwenn residents for one last hurrah.

Actor Martin Clunes appeared on Sunday’s instalment of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh where they touched on the upcoming festive episode.

The host said: “There is a little bit of a cherry on the cake in that we are getting a Christmas special.

“Can you give us any hints as to what might happen in the Christmas one? Is he going to London? Has he changed his mind again?”

Although Martin revealed that viewers won’t be seeing him decide to go to London, as he opted to stay in the fictional Cornish town of Portwenn, filmed in the real town of Port Isaac.

He replied: “No, we wrapped everything up with the last series so it’s sort of an addendum if you like.

“There’s a turkey in it, I can tell you that, a real living turkey, no expense spared. Port Isaac is decorated with lights and a huge tree.

“Claire Bloom reprises her role as my mum, in a very special way.”

Doc isn’t a fan of the festive period for his own personal reasons as his parents left him on Christmas Day to play with nothing but a pencil set and an orange in his Christmas stocking.

Left scarred by the situation, he’s remained cynical about the holidays but comes to question his own parenting when he sees his mother in a hallucination.

Although there isn’t a confirmed date for the special, shooting for the episode started in February, months before production on the final season began.

A synopsis for the Christmas special reads: “Martin is called out to see Leonard (Santa) who has had an accident, and as he is anaemic he cannot afford to lose any blood.

“As Martin is driving to Leonard’s house the weather is getting worse and he has an accident, which causes him to hallucinate about his mother (Claire Bloom), prompting some of his own parenting concerns.

“Eventually making it to Leonard’s house and recovering from the cold, he treats Leonard. Leonard confides in Martin about the death of his wife and why he celebrates Christmas.

“He challenges Martin to do the same. But will they make it back to the village in time for the Christmas parade Louisa has organised?”

The Doc Martin Christmas Special was written by Jack Lothian, and directed by Nigel Cole. The producer is Philippa Braithwaite and the executive producer is Mark Crowdy.

Doc Martin episodes are available to watch on the ITV hub.
